    when does the stink start?

I'm growing about 6-8 (maybe less, depending on sex) plants in an indoor environment. I believe the seeds to be Northern Lights, but am not 100%. The guy who gave them to me was an avid grower and told me they were, but I don't trust anything until the check has cleared, so to speak.

Anyway, I have plenty of ventilation in my growing area. A huge amount of air is always moving through during the daytime, and at night it slows down quite a bit, but I have fans pushing through a ton of air, vented outside.

I'm curious about the smell. My venting window is maybe 50' from a sidewalk. Do you think people will be able to smell it from there? When exactly is the stinkiest part of this process? I figure (since I have tiny seedlings right now) I have a while to work on a fancy odor killing solution, but I was thinking that maybe with that much airflow, that far from a sidewalk, that I wouldn't have too many issues.

Thoughts? I'm 50/50 concerned about people smelling it, as I am a drug dog cruising by. One of my ideas was maybe to kill the fans during the daytime, only allow interior venting (still pretty good), and then vent all night long to the outside. That seems kinda overkill maybe.

Never underestimate the stench of a healthy plant.

Drug dogs, however don't drive. They usually have handlers that drive for them. LMAO!!!!

Even if the drug dog drove by, he wouldnt alert on your shit. Dogs are trained to alert on weeds smell by sitting down and remaining calm.

In fact, prior to going on a drup search, the handler gets the dog all riled up....play with a ball, tug on a towel...all exciteable things to assist the handler in noticeing a sharp reaction of calm on the dog.

Anyhow, 50' is not enough room to make me feel comfortable. The stench can get very strong.

Ever walk thru a neighborhood and smell someones clothes drying from those bounty fresh dryer sheets they throw in the dryer? Smell can carry for hundreds of yards.

At week three is when I had problems. But nothing compared to what is to come.

Start working on your solution now.

once you start flowering the smell will get stronger -- when you're ready to harvest it is really intense.
how are your fans set up to vent to the street? are they smaller fans connected toa dryer vent?
explain when you get a chance

At week three? Holy crap is that early. Man, these be some stinky plants.

I found some articles on how to make charcoal scrubbers, so I'll probably build one of those myself. I'm a little tempted to try another approach, rather than the can method like these:

    http://www.cannabisculture.com/forum...=&fpart=1&vc=1

I was thinking that I could just get two plastic bins from WalMart, one that will fit inside the other with a couple inches of clearance. Make an ass ton of holes in both of them, line it with screening, put batting on the interior of the largest bin, and then fill the void with charcoal.

Either way you go about it, this looks like it would work great. The reports are that these things seriously hack down on the smell. I'm thinking it might be worthwhile to put two of them inline with eachother. Perhaps overkill; perhaps not. We'll see exactly how determined I am. :-)

Picture attached. Basicaly, my grow room is in an oversized closet, which has it's own window. The prevailing wind (which is quite powerful) comes in from another room, enters the grow room through an open door, and exits the little window pictured in the grow room. I have a fan on the window blowing exhaust outbound, as pictured.

What worries me is that the smell will get bad enough that I'll be blasting cannabis stink all over my neighborhood, and someone will get wise and tip Arizona's Finest.

I suppose either way I need to deal with this, because during the 12/12 cycle I wont be able to keep the door open which allows inbound air, so I'll need to make some kind of vent duct to bring air in.

I think I can, with a lot of tape and cardboard, make a hood of some type that will marry itself to the window opening that the fan sets in, and then connect the outbound work the scrubber (not built yet) will be doing to that, with a blower fan sucking air into the whole mess from the grow room. Whew.

That still doesn't solve how I'm going to have lots of fresh air during 12/12, since this only addresses exhaust, so I suppose we'll see. I'm sure some air will leak in from the cracks in the door because I'm setting up a negative ventilation environment, but I have time to figure that part out.

Darpin, if your plants are Northern Lights you may not need to go to such lengths to cover the smell. Northern Lights is known for having low odor. I grew some Oasis a while back which is a type of Northern Lights and it had a very low smell, you had to touch the buds to disturb the trichomes so you could smell it. I now wish I would have stuck with this strain because at the moment I'm growing Afghani which is probably one of the most stankiest strains ever! They don't call it skunk for nothing.

I have had just 2 plants in my room before and once they reached about a foot tall, they really started to stink bad. In fact i they smelled up my whole room. I think one your plants are budding, that even if someone was walking on the sidewalk 50' away that they would have to be a stoner to truly recognize the smell.

You don't think police know what they smell like?

The last time I was in Amsterdam, I smoked Shiva, and it kicked my ass all over the floor. That's the next strain I want to grow, but it's gonna be a stinker for sure. I'm already designing out a killer odor scrubber, and if I do it right I'll put the plans online. It's the same theory as the existing carbon / charcoal scrubbers, except that I don't like how the exhaust isn't more streamlined. I want the exhaust from the scrubber to come straight out of a dryer flexible hose, so my room can be relatively air tight, except for a filtered exhaust. I think this design will be able to facilitate a double ventilation to boot, where you would have a primary and secondary stage setup.
