    Ultra-Efficient LEDs developed by MIT

MIT creates LED that cools its surrounding environment | News | Lighting

A group of researchers in the US have unveiled an LED which emits more light energy than it consumes in electrical energy.

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) unveiled the LED, which has a conventional efficiency of greater than 200 per cent.

This means that unlike traditional halogen lamps and newer LEDs, instead of producing heat this LED will instead cool its surroundings.

Lead researcher, Parthiban Santhanam of MIT, said: ā??The most counterintuitive aspect of this result is that we donā??t typically think of light as being a form of heat. Usually we ignore the entropy and think of light as work.ā?
Anyone have any info about these new LEDs?

mmm maybe if you live in the desert or where heat is a real problem but it says it cools the area and doesnt say how far but did mention it possibly having applications in cryogenics? weird stuff.

:thumbsup:Interesting article, thank you medicinegivers. the article is dated a year ago. It would seem, these should be entering the 'marketplace' soon.

Cryogenics..humm, I wonder if they can rejuvenate a body. Rather interesting though, I wonder what the application would be, to a frozen body..does it need light? idk, sounds pretty interesting.

Southern Calif. is mostly desert, so 'cooling' would be an added bonus! Sure hope someone has heard of this and newer information on it? pr

No new information, but I did read the paper.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the "miracle lights".
We don't exceed unity until we get a narrow gap device down to 30 picowatts.

Hmmm, lemme whip out my slide rule.
    <mumble, carry the P, transpose, mumble>
Lessee now, if I wire up 33 million emitters, I'll have a very efficient one watt array.

    Sigh!
    Next!

    Aloha,

    Weeze

Thanks for giving us some perspective! I have no idea how to do the math, but until we are printing sheets of LEDs like this, I doubt we'll see anything come to market in the grow sector.
I knew it must be too good to be true.
