Hey Mr. President
Are you Listening to the America Voters?
As most of America knows, Colorado and Washington have passed marijuana legalization initiatives. What no one knows is what the response of the Obama Dept. of Justice is going to be. Will they react like they did in California and send in the federal police to undo California state law or will they allow the states to go ahead with their legalization programs?

When Prop. 19 was on the ballot in California, Attorney General Eric Holder held a high level press conference announcing that the feds would not tolerate California legalizing marijuana and would arrest, prosecute and imprison anyone who followed state law. During the 2012 election, the Obama administration remained silent and made no threats like they did in California in 2010.

It could have been a cold calculated election strategy to not alienate young voters who were an important part of Obamaâ??s base and needed to defeat Romney as Obama was only ahead by a 1 or 2 percent. 18-34 year olds support marijuana legalization by almost 3 to 1.

Or maybe, it was because the Obama administration wanted to see what would happen.

President Obama used marijuana extensively in high school and college and he knows that marijuana prohibition is far more dangerous to young people than marijuana is â?? after all throughout high school and college he smoked a lot of pot and heâ??s president of the United States.

(of course, he wouldn't be president of the United States if had gotten CAUGHT smoking pot).
He also saw all the horrors of the drug war on communities of color as a community organizer in Chicago. Before he became President, he labeled the drug war a failure and spoke in favor of decriminalizing marijuana. These two successful legalization initiatives might be just what he has been looking for to give him an opening to bring some sanity to our nationâ??s programs to deal with substance abuse.

There has been much speculation on just what the Obama Administration will do in responding to Colorado and Washingtonâ??s legalization initiatives. An article published Dec. 6 in the New York Times is probably the most authoritative, but there have also been other well thought-comments and articles illustrating the thinking of others on this issue. To see the NY Times article and these other responses CLICK HERE.

As far as I can tell, there is no organized movement on our side being conducted to influence the President. There is certainly a furious organizing movement going on by local, state and federal cops who are fully cognizant that these two legalization initiatives threaten their $20 billion a year marijuana prohibition full employment program.

They are pushing for a strong response from the Obama Administration to overturn these new laws and they will most certainly get there way if we just stand by and do nothing. We need to push back.

This is where the Brownie Mary Democratic Club so perfectly fits in. The group is presenting a resolution to the Riverside County Democratic Central Committee (RCDCC) this Monday, Dec. 10. This resolution calls on the President to respect the will of the voters in Colorado and Washington, respect the will of the voters in states that have mmjs law and to undertake a study to reform our nationâ??s marijuana laws. To see a copy of the resolution CLICK HERE.

The resolution can pass, but we need to show significant community support and that is where you come in. Donâ??t sit this one out â?? you need to get involved. Please take the time to come to our Resolution Rally at the RCDCC meeting this Monday, Dec. 10. Bring friends if you can â?? the more people we have there, the more likely this resolution will pass.

Once the RCDCC passes the resolution, we can keep the ball rolling by holding a press conference to publicize the passage of the resolution and then getting the resolution into the hands of other Democratic Central Committees for passage. Enough Democratic Central Committees pass this resolution and the Democratic Party and hence the President will take notice.

The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., but the resolution is not expected to come up until at least 7:15 p.m. Members of the Brownie Mary Democratic Club will be there for the Resolution Rally beginning at 6:15 p.m. displaying their banner and handing out copies of the resolutions and I Like the MJ Resolution badges. The more of you standing with them as people come to the meeting, the more influence we will have and the more likely the resolution will pass. Donâ??t feel you canâ??t go because you are not a Democrat â?? everyone is welcome to attend.

The Monday, Dec. 10 RCDCC meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and is held at Moreno Banquets, 23750 Alessandro Blvd., Suite K, Moreno Valley, CA 92553. I believe food and beverages are available for purchase if you want some.

If you are planning on going, please send me an email letting me know. Itâ??s always nice to have kind of an idea of how many people will show up.

The BMDC is having a teleconference call about the resolution rally on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. You are welcome to join them in this conference call by calling the teleconference number of 661-673-8600 and when prompted by the voice, enter the access code 275905#.

Our radio show on Monday, December 10 focuses on the Colorado and Washington initiatives and their implications for national and international drug policy. Our first guest is Morgan Fox, Communications Director for the Marijuana Policy Project. MPP was the principle funding source for Coloradoâ??s successful initiative. MPP is also something of an inside the beltway insider and it will be of interest to learn what is being leaked as to the Obama Administrations response to those two legalization initiatives.

Our second guest is Jeffrey Dhywood, author of Word War D and a tireless worker for a number of organizations dedicated to ending the drug war. The ending of marijuana prohibition is major first step in the ending of the drug war and our guest will provide us with his perspectives on the two historic initiatives and how they will influence international drug policy.
