The schedule 1 listing allows marijuana to be treated exactly the same way by the Feds as all of the most dangerous drugs such as Heroin, LSD and Cocaine which are also on the schedule 1 list. The argument is being made in the case in DC now that 1) no one has ever died from marijuana and 2) it appears to have medical uses, in order to get it off of this listing.

The big argument to get marijuana reclassified is that it is showing uses as a medicine to fight many common conditions. This however is very hard to prove because the US Federal Government at the moment holds the patent that locks up anyone's ability to do research using cannabinoids to treat a long list of diseases, specifically mentioning Cancer, Crones MS, Aids and many others. The USDA holds this patent until 2023, blocking any "valid" research being done in this area.

Is it about the money? Of course it is. Imagine what happens to the pharmaceutical industry if it is proven that a plant can aid and even cure many of our common ailments, and imagine the outrage when people realize that an incredible amount of death and suffering could have been avoided if we had been allowed to experiment in this area all these years. Imagine the anger when patients realize that instead of surgery and chemo, a little bit of oil several times a day could have saved them.
