Ok mal. But to anyone else who actually knows what they are talking about, as there are some very intelligent people on these boards, I would be interested to hear what you have to say on this. My current understanding, intuition and instinct tell me these non-pharmaceutical grade solvents are not safe for the purposes of creating medicine due to their impurities and possible toxic additives that are not eliminated during the extraction process.

Howzit brah?
You make an excellent point
Well summed.
And it's an admitted truth that Rick Simpson is no chemist.
His contribution was having the spine to stand up for what's right.
If you want science, I suggest the you do a search for "Graywolf" and "Skunkpharm".
There you will find chemists and engineers who are deeply into cannabis oil production.
I have learned much from them.

"People complain about ethanol as a solvent because it extracts the chlorophyll and some other stuff. But if that is so why not just do a water extraction on the material first to get all that crap out, and to wash of the pesticides. The thc is not water soluble so would not be lost doing a water extraction first."
Problem with that is it knocks off a lot of trichs.
It is acceptable to make bubble hash and then extract the resin from the hashish.
The leftover wet buds can be dried and another 10% or so of oil can be stripped out of them for topical application.
I use Ethanol for medibles.
And Naphtha for topicals.

Hey Weezard, I really appreciate the feedback. I realize I may have been a little more critical of Rick than he deserves, because we do need people like that who are willing to make the stand for this stuff. And I will keep my eyes peeled for Graywolf and Skunkpharm in the future, and may look into some of the stuff they have on here.
In regards to your second post, that does make sense about the trichs getting knocked off and getting lost with the water and that being the main problem. I was hoping that just maybe running it through a couple un bleached coffee filters would prevent such a loss. As far as I understand it the micron rating on an average coffee filter is like 15 to 30 and I was hoping that would be small enough to prevent the trichs from sneaking through with the watery solution. I also figured there would be a lot stuck the the first coffee filter which I would probably just throw in with the remaining plant material when I do the ethanol extraction step. I hope that should prevent all or at least most of the content loss.
I say I hope because like 10 minutes ago I just broke up an ounce of some good herb and threw it in a jar with water for the first time actually trying it. Up untill now it's just been theoretical. So I guess we will see how it turns out huh? Lol

I just love that attitude.
Most folks will ask "What would happen if . . . ?"
To which, the most educational answer is.
Try it and see!
Just whip out a theory.
Then devise some tests.
Goodonya!
Now no forget to come back and tell us what you found out.
Weigh the buds, weigh the resin, weigh the oil, please.
I trust that you used very cold water?
That's critical for making bubble.
It makes the glands break free, easily.
And I'd suggest that you use a kitchen sieve to pre-filter.
Then, a 45 micron bubble bag will take a lot less time to drip through than coffee filters.
And, if you keep the water cold, the resin glands will sink to the bottom.
A little waiting, and decanting, and siphoning can yield some fine full-melt without the use of any filters.
Makes "po'-boy hash".
Aloha,
Weeze

You also have a good idea with just using the bubble hash for the oil extraction, I will have to try that next time.
This time though I think I will stick with my original experiment which is just doing the ethanol extraction on the entire amount of plant material without separating anything first.
So instead of using cold water to break off the trichomes or glands I used hot water initially which was geared more towards removing as much chlorophyll as possible, and hopefully a good amount of pesticide residue. I was thinking of it like making a cup of tea. The hot water extracts that stuff better and quicker I thought. It's not hot now though I'm just going to leave it at room temperature for a day or two.
Then ill use the coffee filters because I don't want to separate the trichomes or glands from the leaf/bud plant material. I want to keep all of the thc containing material together because its all going to get washed with the ethanol. I only want to extract the chlorophyll and other impurities and wash off the pesticides with the water when it is strained from all the thc containing material. I'm even going to throw the filter in with the ethanol after the straining process just to make sure all of the stuff that got stuck to the filter will be stripped of the goodies (hopefully). I think I will post the results and updates on the other thread I created which is under the title of "Water wash before ethanol extraction of cannabis oil?" Just because I don't want to hijack this thread I don't think that would be fair to the original poster. Feel free to check that one out tho man. I really will be interested to see how this experiment goes. I really have no idea what to expect. Ill take some pictures and post those as well after I figure that all out because I'm still new to these boards and I'm still getting my sea legs as they say, haha!

Your not alone, many of us are in the same boat. I've had undiagnosed chronic chest pain for over five years. Lots of Dr.s but no answer. Hang in there and try not to lose hope. Remember that there is no one size fits all remedy. Keep searching until you find something that you can live with.

I did for the first few days and took zantac for it and it helped but now I'm up to 1/3 gram a day but I feel bloated and have that icky feeling 24/7 over the past couple of days. This is nothing new to me because before I started the oil, I used to smoke and every time I smoked, I got that same knot in my stomach every time but only lasted an hour before it eased up and I got the munchies. I don't get the munchies with the oil. I'm not gonna take the oil today to see if my abdominal distress eases up.
