Not sure what state your in but here in michigan, you can grow anywhere legally if you got your card up to 12 plants, you don't have to ask permission from the landlord or owner but he can deny you if he finds out, or he can deny you in the first place, and not much you can do about it, then there is local ordinances that could also make you in violation, I think as long as your legal and within your limits you can legally grow anywhere you live/rent/own without much risk.
