Republicans have elected an extremely bigoted man to the Senate before. His name was Strom Thurmond.

This was a man who ran for president in 1948 as a "Dixiecrat" on an entirely segregationist agenda. In 1957, as a Senator, he set the record for the filibuster, holding the floor by himself for over 24 hours, railing against the Civil Rights Act saying things like, "I want to tell you that there's not enough troops in the army to force the southern people to break down segregation and admit the Negro race into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into our homes, and into our churches." The people of SC sent this man to Washington until he died at age 100 in 2003.

You might remember that at one of his memorial services, Trent Lott got his ass in a lot of trouble by saying, "I want to say this about my state. When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years either." That comment cost him his job as Senate Majority Leader. He's still in the Senate though.
