First time growing in a LONG time...
I last did a grow almost 10 years ago, using (very) high output T5 lights in a small cabinet SCROG setup, with excellent results. However, my living situation made it impossible to do another grow after that one, and I fear I've forgotten almost as much about growing as I ever learned. Now that I'm considering putting together a small setup again, I am venturing back onto the internets in search of your wisdom. Here are a few categories where I'm hoping for some feedback:
Lighting
I would like to stick to some sort of fluorescent lighting, both for power consumption and avoidance of overheating (the grow will be in my attic, which gets a little warm in summer). I'm sad to see that those bright T5's aren't much cheaper than they were 10 years ago, so I'll probably go for the highest wattage CFLs I can get at Lowes/Home Depot. How much CFL wattage should I be looking at if I plan a 2-plant SCROG? Is it better to have a few medium-range CFLs spread around, or a couple really high-wattage ones?
Enclosure
For odor control and temperature control purposes, I'd like to use some kind of cabinet or tent in my attic, rather than just growing directly in the attic. Last time I used the cheapest "wardrobe"-type cabinet I could get from Wal-Mart, but I'm intrigued by the idea of either purchasing or constructing some kind of tent structure, to better contain odors. Should I just stick with a solid cabinet, or is this whole tent thing worth the slight extra expense (or extra effort if I make one out of canvas or tarp)? One thing I liked about the cabinet I used before was it allowed me to have a small vegging chamber on a separate shelf from the main grow chamber, but maybe that's possible with tents too?
Odor Control
Unlike my last grow, it's very important that I minimize the odors this time, as I often have people in my home who would not be within my "circle of trust." I've read some of the info on making activated carbon air filters, so I think I'll do that. Last time I used a powerful desk fan suspended from bungees for my exhaust, and it was remarkably quiet, but I used no filtration and the odors were pretty strong, especially as harvest time neared. Is there an affordable option other than making an activated carbon filter? Are there any other strategies I can use to minimize odor detection? I'm planning to vent directly to the outside from the attic, which has an old (dysfunctional) venting fan that predates the central a/c unit. I'll remove that fan and just tape my exhaust duct to the vent.
Acquiring Seeds
It is of the utmost importance that I get seeds using the most anonymous and trustworthy option available. Many of the threads on this subject appear to be from 5+ years ago, so I just wanted to get updated suggestions. It looks like SeedsDirect has morphed into some other website -- that's what I used last time -- so what's the best choice at this time? I am located in the United States. I would happily grow bagseed, if it hadn't been like 5 years since I last saw a seed in weed I purchased. This is the downside of quality control!
Things I Left Out?
Anything else?
Thanks in advance for any tips or help! And yes, I realize there are a lot of good posts with this information out there, and I have been perusing them (and will continue to do so), but I thought it couldn't hurt to ask as many questions as I have before I get started with the project.ourkansaw Reviewed by ourkansaw on .
