my first dwc question
I would like to know why my roots are growing upward twards the plant and the top of my medium. It's not bad, but the roots will soon be exposed. What's causing it and what do I need to do to prevent it if it will have negative results further down the line?

I added some more claystone ontop to put more matter between my roots and the light.
But do I need to cover the claystones with something?

Mine did the same thing.. It's all good! You did the right thing! The roots are just growing all over the stones getting all the nutrients, feeder roots, kinda circle the pot in hydro. Take into consideration.. We are learnin' this method together! I think I got it down,though..

Thanks Ga!
I'm getting the hang of this too! I'm thinking ill be doing four buckets next time. Or maybe just two.
When will you be flowering? I was wondering should I get a bigger bucket?
The one I'm using now is only a three and a half gallon. I was gonna buy a storage bin (not too big)
For my next go. So i can put both plants in one container. Ant they have these foot long, flat airstones at the store that I can lay on the bottom. I'm excited! I like this way better than dirt! I'm letting mine grow like a total of five or four months, idk. I'm feeling like I wanna bud it, but I want it to be huge!
Does your roots grow evenly around your netpot? Cuz mine are grownig weird, like on either side, and not as plush in the center.

Your welcome! I'd go with the 5 gallon bucket and the 10 inch net pot bucket top. I'm gonna flower after I get 5 more airlayer clones from her. Soooo...... Maybe around mid January.

Lots of water to have to deal with instead of the 5 gallons. Plus bigger air pumps..Instead of 1 pump with 4 outlets and a 4 single bucket system. If you screw 1 plat up? You still have 3 more. If it were the bin and not mixed right? you've gone and done it,huh?
Flower it! Top it first and then again..

That's where it all happens is in that bucket or res.

my first dwc question
Cool, I have topped it a couple time now, I have some pics in the album. I'll be adding more later tonight so the progress can be seen. As of right now there are about fifteen new growth sprouts on the top alone, all in a little circle. I won't be topping it again I don't think as its soon gonna be a freaking bush! however like I said before, theres roots growing on either side of the netpot, but its slower in the middle. I'm thinking it might be due to the fact of the weird and probly harsh transpland from dirt ti rock wool in its younger years. Like maybe the roots didn't grow through the rockwool all the way in those spots where the roots arent a lush. What do u think? Because all the pics of plants the same age as mind have monstrous roots compared to mine? Do you think they will ever recover?
Sry for the 20 questions, just my curiosity...

Mine's all Bushy as hell, too! Stalk is thick at base, and the roots are white. Just says something is going,right.. Looks like a canna chia! Straight-out round, shoots everywhere!
We seem to be on the same track.. I tried that rockwool net pot, trick. It was in soil, though. Anyway.. It did't do what it should had due to the net pot, restricting the base of the plant. Roots,too.. I think you'll be fine, honestly! Just learn not to do it no mo! I did... The twenty ????'s ..... Don't matter to me! Ask away! I'll help ya best I can!

Ga has it right about the storage bin. Use five gallon buckets instead. They work great for DWC. There are some videos on youtube if you want to check them out, but keep it simple. Don't go for all the elaborate things you see. It's not necessary. Also, remember that four to five months for DWC is pretty long. Don't let them outgrow the room. I think it's funny that people pack grow rooms with buckets seeming to forget how big the plants can get.

Mine has done exactly that.. Outgrown it's home. After this air layering I'm doin'... I'm gonna flower. Jan.3 2012. The reason it's done this is because I should have taken four air layers and not 1 and then the rest. It had all that time waitin' on me to finish and has taken off. I can't reach around it.Over 2 ft. wide and same tall. But it has an even canopy... T5..

The roots growing on the top of your medium is from your branches growing, these roots grow as far as the branches. They are growing for support cus your plant is getting tall. I posted photos on Flickr of my dwc and what I used was a vinyl mat to cover them from any light. Bayou bud 20011 on Flickr
