I didn't understand that either. Bayou apparently thinks that the plant grows roots sideways to support the greater weight of itself. I've never heard of this explanation but anything is possible.
When I said plant done right can easily take over a grow room, here is a good example of what I meant:

Ok, so I just piled on more claystones around the bottom of the plant. The roots don't grow upwards anymore, and the plant seems to be more stable in the netpot. It was a little tipsy before. I have see hydro setups where the roots completely overtook the hydroton on top, tons of roots sticking up from top of the netpot. And actually, plants roots do grow horizontal sometimes. That's why u find tree roots two times the tree length away. Because the roots are growing outward so the topheavy tree is stable. And my plant is taking over my grow room, so I'm obviously doing something right. And the plant is very topheavy. So for it to grow an extra amount if support, its sending more roots out to explore... It makes perfect sense...

For real... I'm gonna flower her as soon as these 2 air layers show roots.Around Jan.3-4... The plant has already out grown my flower room as far as height, goes. I'm gonna have to LST some now. It's a freakin' BUSH Dawg... I can't wait to see what this one does in the end. It's so stout! The stalk under the panda film is as big as a Bud Light can. The ring part of the can. This could be a 1 lb plant... I cant wait til week 3 of flowering.Gonna do it with 10/14 schedule. Wish I had scroggrd this beauty! I was air layerin',she was my subject. Kinda let her get a bit wild on me.. Who don't like a Wild one? I do!

In the last 10 hydro bucket I've done, these roots grow rapidly near the top of the hydrotons... thinking roots are light sensitive I covered them. The plant seems to get new growth outward.I have a bermese kush in flower now, 1 gal setup...300 watt cfl and I use seltzer water(no sodium) follar spray ... posted on Flickr bayou bud 2011
