Yes, and no. The red card will get you an exception to the Colorado Marijuana laws along with access to dispensaries and caregivers. The doctor's recommendation will only provide you with an affirmative defense once you make it as far as a courtroom.

So in short, if you are only possessing and less than two ounces, you probably can get away with not having a card. Possession is a petty offense in Colorado. $100 fine, court costs, and no record. You have to get caught 2 times in one year to be more expensive than the cost of the doctor and red card.

If you are growing, that is a whole different story...and nothing near a petty offense.
