I am just woundering what happens if you were to put a 4 week old plant into flower?? does it have a growth spurt before it starts budding or does it just bud but not as much ??

what happens when you early flower??

From my early flower experiences,if flowered at around 12 inches.. You will get a nice bid one stalked bud unless you topped early. The plant will go through a slight stretch. I am assumming you are using an HID light 600 or better. Not saying 400 won't do well! I've just used 600's and 1000 watters, when flowering at a height of 12 inches. They use that method as a sea of green standard height.

Most all plants will go thru a stretch during the first few weeks of 12/12, regardless.
-This is from the plant getting less light.

If putting an immature plant in 12/12, it will stretch just the same.
-Difference is, this plant will continue to 'veg' in 12/12 until it becomes mature.

In most cases, mature plants are indicated by alternating nodes and preflowers.

I usually send mine into flowering when they.are.around a foot tall. ( my canopy is usually not even, so when the smallest one reaches one foot in height, I start the process of flowering.) Good luck!

In my experience, flowering can indeed be started at almost any time - but the longer you veg, the bigger the plant gets before starting to flower, so that will mean more tops and thus a higher yield. If you're only growing a single plant for example, it's usually a better idea to veg longer to get more out of the plant - SOG growers often induce flowering when a specific height is reached because there are more plants and less real-estate to grow in (smaller plants, but more overall plants per square foot).

Also though, some strains will mature (alternating nodes and preflowering) faster than others and thus can go into flowering at the time that this happens..or later as well. I've had my plants show maturity AND preflowers at 4 weeks veg, but I still keep them in veg until they reach the size I want (for yield reasons).

Typically, plants going into 12/12 will double in height, with most strains stretching during the first 2 - 2.5 weeks. Some will get 3x the height...usually Sativa dom strains... Peace!
