2nd sprout in same pot? What is this in my pic?

I took a picture of my plant so far, it just sprouted yesterday... i'm not sure how long it's supposed to take for first leaves to spread open, but it's been 24 hours since it surfaced & it's still closed up like that, but just a tad taller...

Anyways, when I planted the seed, it took over 4 days to surface, so as I was getting impatient, i tried to lightly brush some of the top layer of soil away & noticed a little white stem looking thing right at the top layer, when I woke up in the morning, it was still there, but there was an even bigger white thing emerging (turned out to be the sprout) but that original white stem thing is still there right next to it, as you can see in the picture... any ideas of what this is? good or bad? I thought it could have been a second sprout, which didnt make sense, since there's only one seed in there...

Also, if anyone knows or can tell, it looks like it has a very tad bit of a brown shade to the sprout... is this bad? I'm using cfls right now, but they're in a reflector & about 4-5 inches away cause of heat... the room fluctuates between 78 & 82 degrees. Thanks a ton everyone.

Sometimes when seeds open and fall off the seedling, a little transparent skin is left on seedling. Remove it. I gently spray/mist it with water to loose it and make it softer and gently take it of using tweezers or a toothpick. Take a look at the brown spot at the tip of seedling it will help you see the skin. When you spray it you will maybe slowly see the skin start to crack and open or slide off.

The white sprout must be part of the root system cover it up with soil. or sometime with low quality soil mix containing organic matter, you will get a alien life form(weed) that will sprout on you lol. If it's the case remove it.

thanks a bunch! That helps... It's my first grow & i'm kind of just doing it to get some experience as I build my box (in the process now), so because of all my cash going into the box right now for good future grows, I'm not terribly worried about this plant, it's bag-seed after all... but it is cheap "organic" miracle gro soil, so that sounds accurate, but
I'm not entirely sure, but when I move that white thing, it seems to move the seedling a bit, so that may indicate it's a root?

I spent a lot of time researching whether the germinated seed got planted root up or root down, while most people seemed to say down, it seems like the more reputable sources/science seemed to back-up the root gets planted up because it bends up, then goes down... so now I'm wondering if it really should go down & this is just a indication that it should have been planted the other way... & maybe that extra time/energy it spent correcting it to grow right would have made it take that long to sprout? but what do I know? It is my first go-around after all

Is it a coolcab style growbox that you built? And I dont know if you used that method , paper towel to germinate the seed and then you planted it. But if it's the method you used I dont recommend it. Paper towels are white and full of chemicals like chlorine they are bleached it's what makes them white. Start them in the soil like mother nature wants it! they will always find the way, well most of the time because of the heat from the lights, it's the sun in your setup so they will pop out head first!

Ive always used the paper towel method when germing my seeds. Never had any problems at all. The main thing you have to worry about is temp. Keep those babies around 80-85. From there I transplant into cups with root pointed down. Not very deep and they usually pop up within a couple days. I use tweezers to handle the seed and never touch the tap root. If all else you can always plant the seed sideways if you ever get confused on which way to do it.
Or you can just plant it straight into dirt like canadian said

Pushit one other reason I dont like paper towel method is because usually only few of the beans pop using that method. Almost 100% of seeds pop in soil! But maybe you are better at using paper towels than most people.:thumbsup:

but thanks, I couldn't get the "skin" off, i tried with a toothpick, seems as if nothings there, will this be a problem? It looks like the leaves are starting to poke out the sides of that opening on the seedling though, but the tip of it is still closed where the brown spot is, which I'm guessing is the thing I need to get off in order for it to open fully... any other way to go about doing it, or should it do it automatically?

Look it up it will answer most of your questions! Coolcab, mini coolcab etc..... cab is short for cabinet.

Lightly mist it several times a day. This will cause that hull to get softer therefor the plant will shed it easier or maybe with a little assistance. I run across that problem when i dont plant it deep enough in the soil. But on the same note i would rather have a simple problem like this vs planting too deep and never get a sprout. Try misting for a couple days and see if that helps you out a little. Plus seedlings like the humidity:thumbsup:
