I spent a lot of time researching whether the germinated seed got planted root up or root down, while most people seemed to say down, it seems like the more reputable sources/science seemed to back-up the root gets planted up because it bends up, then goes down... so now I'm wondering if it really should go down & this is just a indication that it should have been planted the other way... & maybe that extra time/energy it spent correcting it to grow right would have made it take that long to sprout? but what do I know? It is my first go-around after all

Ive always used the paper towel method when germing my seeds. Never had any problems at all. The main thing you have to worry about is temp. Keep those babies around 80-85. From there I transplant into cups with root pointed down. Not very deep and they usually pop up within a couple days. I use tweezers to handle the seed and never touch the tap root. If all else you can always plant the seed sideways if you ever get confused on which way to do it.
Or you can just plant it straight into dirt like canadian said
