By hairs I am assuming you are talking about the pistils, and not the almost microscopic "hair" on many strains main trunks and larger stems... on a young female the pistils look like 2 hairs rising up from the oval calyx in a V, and they will be located at the base of the new nodes. Find a picture of these here on the board for reference. These are called pre-flowers and eventually they will turn into new buds, but you will see long before that another change in your plant as you switch to the 12/12 lights and switch to flowering mode... instead of developing new branches at the top of the plant and the ends of each existing branch, you will notice that the nature of these "ends" changes... The plants start throwing out pistils from these ends, turning them into flowers. The pre-flowers you are now seeing... some will turn into new branches, and at the ends of those, you will find the flowers, and some will end up being small buds, and some will never develop.
My advice is to stay in veg until your plant is 1/2 the size you wish it to end up. Just because you are seeing pistils is not a good reason to switch to flowering mode. Patience is the key operating word here. Switch the lights to 12/12 when they get big enough and then expect the plant to double in size in the next 2-3 weeks and watch as the structure of the new growth changes form right before your eyes. It really is remarkable to watch it happen.

emilya Reviewed by emilya on . quick question before i ask i will say this is my first grow and i am not worried about yield or quality. the main plant is about 3 weeks old and 7 inch's. ive had the main plant budding for almost 2 weeks now. it does not have any pistils or nut sacks yet. but it does have what appears to have small white trichs on it(cant see in pic).my question is if its starting to smell skunky and has small trichs would that mean that its a female?
