1st time grower answers - Observation Male vs. Female
Hey everybody,
It's been a long time since i've been on here, and I wanted to help a lot of the newbs at this by showing the subtle differences of Males vs Females. I should start by saying that i've been at this for MONTHS, and was on the brink of calling it quits until I got another breath of wind in me and tried one more time. When it comes to this, it's all about the atmosphere, the lighting, and how regular you water or how strong/weak your nutrients are.
At first I took a lunge to Hydro, thinking that it would be easy, and it was quite easy, but the chances of you getting lucky on ONE PLANT being a Fem...that's just outright crazy! I had to learn by my mistakes and learn the "Do's and Dont's" on my own. There's nothing that I can tell you that will make this any easier for you, but if you want the chances of getting a Fem in your batch of green heaven, you need to plant MULTIPLE seeds and weed out the males once they identify themselves. I planted 8 and with my limited knowledge I had 2 that just didn't grow fast enough and later shriveled into nothing, 1 that grew too fast and tall and wound up being a male, and and the other 5 that were in a sexual dispute. 2 of those were only female.
There is literally no way to tell what the sex of the plant will be until 1-2 weeks into bloom (1 - 1 1/2 Months Later), and then comes the excited/dissapointed stages - and i've had 3 disapointed stages to go through before this final attempt. If you are serious about this, then you need to know what to look for - and spotting a Male vs a Female is easier than you think, and i have pictures of my own crop to show the subtle differences.
Males - Males will grow balls (they're actually flowers containing pollen when they finally open), and this pollen can ruin your crop if you don't weed out the males as soon as you can tell what they are. Males grow tall, and females can too, but females are generally more bushy (extra leaves & stems growing between the " V " joining of the plant. The Male will grow balls, and show up in bunches on the " V " joining of the stalk on every level of your plant. See exhibit A:
A: http://boards.cannabis.com/members/m...2096-male.html
Females on the other hand look more Bushy, and generally shorter than other plants, because they have to focus on filling out, rather than filling up towards the light source. females are generally more bushy (extra leaves & stems growing between the " V " joining of the plant) and grow white hairs (Pistils) that branch out and reach up towards the light. You also see these white hairs at the " V " joining of the of the stalk. See exhibit B:

I hope this helps you new growers in learning more about this wonderful plant, and the beauty that lies in both sexes. May your luck be better than mine, and may your harvests be bountiful and full of the stickiest of the icky.
Ciao,
MJ420
P.S.: And one more thing......I FINALLY got a female!!!! WOOT!!!:smokin:
