Using "charcole" in potting soil.
Hello, I'm using potting soil and wan't to us CHARCOLE in my soil. I live here in Phoenix, Az and our water is high in salt. I willl buy bottle water if I have to but much rather use the back yard hose. Thus using CHARCOLE in my potting soill to capture the high salt. The Charcole I thaught about using is the same I use for BBQ and if so do I grind it up or do I use it in bisquett size...lol. Please let me know and thanks for all your help:rasta:

Hi,
maybe it would be better if you filterd your water through a charcoal fileter. Use can use a 6' piece of plastic drain pipe for the filter.
I think it would be best to crush the charcoal first to give more surface area.

I would probably go to a pet store and get a large bag of the charcoal they use in aquariums, if the water is that salinity I'd probably filter it before watering too! Boiling it would remove the salt as well.

Knowledge is rite boiling it wont remove the salt only the steam that rises from the boiling process will be pure the salt will still be in the water even if boilied..boiling it only removes the chlorine and other nasty chemicals. you can look up how to build p.v.c water filters online very easy to make... dose it rain much where you live?? well where i live in ireland it never stops raining so i collect as much rain water as i can get and i store it in 5 gallon drums till i need it.. ya wont get water better than this dude plus its 100% natural and i never have any problems with my ph in any of my grows..

Charcoal in the planting mix oh my! Guys this is realy a great idea in a whole bunch of ways, but won't absorb salt from solution. Primitive man used slash and burn to not only clear the land but improve the soil. When we put "biochar" int the soil it does wonders. It provides many benefits, check out the biochar oven on Y tube, can't remember the links for it and the paper on Biochar, but it was truly impressive. Folks in NorCal are using it in their grows and are into it big.

Cool idea... it'll absorb a lot of bad stuff from your water, especially broken up (more surface area exposed), unfortunately, it'll do nothing for the salt you wanna get rid of.
