Why is there not a 800 Watt HPS system? I need the appropiate system for a 4x4 room.

All the online calculators say for my 4X4 room, I need 800 watts.

Thats all fine and dandy, but I cannot find a 800 watt system..

    I found 400, 600 and 1000..

Is the 600 enough? Or is the 1000 too much?

I'd much rather go over in Lumens, than under...

    4x4= 16sqftx5,000L = 80,000Lumens needed.

    -Most 600w HPS = 88,000 - 90,000 Lumens
    -Most 750W HPS = 110,000 Lumens
    -Most 1000W HPS = 130,000 - 140,000 Lumens

So IMHO, I'd go with the 600W as long as my room was a closed in 4x4.

Is the 1000 watt too much light?

Not if you can control the temps that come with....

600's are more efficient than a 1000.. you need 800? 1000 watts to much light? Never enough light! As long as you have proper ventilation, passive as well as exhaust.

Get a 600 watt with an extra wide reflector - I used to grow 4x4 with a 600 all the time with one. With that limited of a space you are going to have a hard time cooling 1000w without a really good ventilation setup. I had problems just keeping temps in line on a 600w system with an air cooled hood. 600W will grow more than enough bud for one or two people - only reason I can see to go 1000 is if you are growing to sell.

1000w lights are a waste of energy IMO. I started out growing with 1000w lights for a few years and when I switched to 600w lights I was suprised to see my yields actually increase
and my energy bill dropped significantly.
The reason my yield increased is because I was able to put 600w of light over each plant and, because heat was much less intense, I was able to move the lights closer which made better use of the
    light I already had.

600w lights also create less heat overall, which cut down on cooling costs in the room environment.

so...a 600w light is what you want...hands down.

in a 4'x4' space I highly recomend not going above 600w because cooling the light will be nearly impossible.
also, 1000w lights will significantly cut down on the height you can grow your plants because the heat they put off ( even when 1000cfm fan is pulling through 6" hoods) prevents you from allowing the plant to get closer to the light than 16-18".
So with that in mind you can cut 18" from your usable plant height for the light, 12-20" are gone for container height, plus hood (16"). So if you use a 1000w light you will lose roughly 4ft of vertical grow space.
600w: you will gain 1ft or more of vertical grow space because the foliage can almost touch the hoods when using a 600w light in a sealed, well ventilated hood.

    hope this helps...

Ok my question in im wondering weather to use a 600 or 1000 HPS light for a 5x5x5 room...Thinking im going to flower maybe 6-8 plants at one time....So if you say a 600 watt is better for a 4x4 room would you agree im better off energy wise to suffectently bud 6-8 Plants?

Assuming you'd have appropriate cooling, I'd look for a way to use 2 x 600's. I'd also use digital ballasts with selectable output for more control. They key is always keeping the space cool and well ventilated. Myself, I use 2 600's and 2 t-5 panels (4ft - 8 tube) to provide a light footprint of 7' x 4'. All are vertically adjustable giving plent of flexibility for a varied canopy with a maximum of about 6.5' to the bottom edge of the reflectors. The room is 6.5' x 13'. I use 15k btu window ac unit on a timer plus a 450 cfm exhaust fan on a temp controller. This keeps it in the 70's with lights on.

    Good luck!
