Ive only done it a couple times. I usually just chop the whole plant. When i did do it i just took a small leave from each bud and looked at it under the microscope. If it was the way i liked i chopped that bud off. I usually cut mine at around 10% amber. Thats just how i did it so i couldnt tell you if it was the "Proper" way of doing things.
