Seattle Mayor Set to Sign Medical Cannabis Ordinance Wednesday.

Tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn is scheduled to hold a press conference where he will sign a medical cannabis ordinance passed last week by Seattle City Council on a unanimous vote. The ordinance requires collectives to have business licenses, to pay B&O taxes and to be at least 1,000 feet away from schools among other requirements. This is certainly a landmark moment both in the history of Seattle and of medical cannabis in this state and country. Few cities have gone out on their own on the issue in the way that Seattle has (Oakland, Calif. would be one).

One local attorney, Douglas Hiatt, has threatened to sue the city over the regulations, which is an interesting approach for a longtime patient advocate and defender. The press conference will take place at Seattle City Hall.

In addition to the Mayor, the Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes, City Council member Nick Licata, State Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles (D-Seattle) and possibly a couple of patients will make remarks for the media.

Obviously, Douglas is going after city money. Keeping thing illegal opens the money drawer for lawyers.
