250 is fine, but you don't use two sodium with one for veg and the other for flower. They're both for flower, but you can use one for a plant when it's small and add the other one later. It's metal halide that is typically used for veg.

I wouldn't trade a 400w for a 250w.... Are they going to give you 2 - 250w lamps that you can run at the same time or just 1 - 250w lamp with 2 bulbs, 1bulb for veg and 1bulb for flower???

You are waaaaaaaaaaay better off going the CFL route and sticking with the 400w for flower IMO....

Double fixtures are inexpensive and so are CFL bulbs....well worth the small investment. No, the CFL's will not slow growth, if anything they help because of their low heat transfer and ability to get plants to practically touch the bulb before over stressing....

I agree with CanGroIt on the 400. Stick with that. You can still use it for veg then for flower. Mh is more preferred for veg but hps will do the job. As for the price on a cfl setup for seedlings.... 2 bulbs for 7 bucks, clamplight around 7 bucks, Y for both bulbs 2.50. Less than 20 bucks for the setup and you can use that in a little box or something and place anywhere in your place. Or you can just put them over the seedlings and run the lights 24 (that way any other light wont interrupt their dark time) til they get big enough for that 400. Thats just what i have done in the past. You can triple that it id be around the same price as a replacement bulb for that 400. Just something to think about. Hope that helps.

    also a thought

in the nature, they are getting full sunlight even as seedlings, dosnt the flouros make the plant weaker?
cfl's are flouros also. its just the spread of light is different. this kind of light is sufficient for seedlings and clones. once their canopies expand you need higher intensity light. also as pushit said know this, if you want the best it will cost a little. reward is very little cost per ounce, once the initial setup is complete. two plants under a 400 cant get very tall.

I thought the 2 250's might be better in the long run, as you can clone and grow more with more bulbs and you'll have a total of 500 watts. Flouros are good idea as they cool temp-wise and cheap but if you store if willing to switch you one light for two, going with two 250s might serve you better in the long run. If not, then the stronger 400 and a flouro or two would be smart.

Im not positive but i think he meant to say one 250 with two bulbs (MH and HPS). So its just one 250 i think. But if hes talking about 2 separate units then thats the way to go. 500w is better than 400 in my book any day haha.

    new grower with a question

Well, pushit, that could be but in order to run an hps and an mh using the same ballast, you have to have at least one bulb that will operate off of the other's ballast. If not, then he needs one hps ballast and one mh ballast. So that's why I thought he was saying he'd get the 400 switched for the two 250s.

Cool, CanGroIt asked that question and has yet to be answered. It could be either or and until rbush replies we will never know haha. Nothing to lose sleep over.
