    miracle grow. good or bad?

That steam idea sounds like a good one. I have heard of baking it but never steaming it. Yea bugs are bad especially in walmart soil and local places that buy more then they should and have it sitting around forever. I have never used Hortons but i have used some soils like hyponex that pretty much turn grey and hard like concrete. The only use for that crap is maybe patching holes in the driveway haha.

    miracle grow. good or bad?

It's the strictly organic crowd that bad mouths MG, I've used it with good results BUT it is easy to overfertilize and it is very unforgiving if you do, I stay on the conservative side when mixing it and won't give my plants full strength until they are larger. Works great as a foilar spray. I like to alternate with some manure/worm compost/fish oil/seaweed tea and throw in about a 1/4 dose of MG about once a month. I think the organic material provides very beneficial micro nutrients.

I just picked up a large bag of MG potting mix I plan on using.

I'm using MG with good results, and I augmented the MG nutes with my own fertilizer tea. Just don't overdo it. You can follow the "Sunroom Grow" link in my signature for lots of details and plenty of photos. Eight weeks to the day from transplanting to first harvest.

jahoo, like you I also move my plants daily from the closet to the sunroom and back for lighting control with no hermie issues. As with any photoperiod-sensitive plants, the key is to not interrupt their dark cycle. The day cycle is much more flexible, since plants have to deal with partial shade all the time anyway, as well as with temperature changes.

what is worm compost?never heard bout that before.>>>

Oooops, meant worm castings(poop) excellent soil conditioner and high in N as well as other micronutrients.

My brother is dead set againsg miracle grow, will only use organic and won't even use pesticides to battle insects. They have a kit which brews manure/worm castings/fish emulsion and bat guano into a tea and they use it for foilar feeding as well as watering.

I don't have a kit I just mix everything in a gallon container and put the bubbler from my aquarium pump in the solution and let it aerate for about 24 hours, the oxygen is supposed to bring the "brew" alive and makes it very active in the soil.

For my spring crop even if I wasn't fertilizing I'd use the aquarium pump bubbler in the water for about 24 hours before watering, this should help dissipate any chlorine in the water and provides fresh oxygen to the roots.

Some folks are misinformed about the benefits of organics. A harmless mistake, but quite an anal one for most enthusiasts. A chemical compound is a chemical compound, regardless of whether it's "organic" or "inorganic". As long as the microbial life in the medium is happy, the plants should be too..
Fertilizer: Organic (Natural) versus Chemical (Inorganic)

If you are unfamiliar with the risks hazards of aerobic and anaerobic microbes that mixing/using your home-brew teas may encourage, perhaps you should either carefully read and understand this entire article: http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/~linda%2...CompostTea.pdf
...or just go ahead and risk salmonella or e-colli, or clogging your stomata's with unnecessary 'gunk'.

Suction draws-down air when you water. In soil, there is no need to aerate the water prior to use.

"Suction draws-down air when you water. In soil, there is no need to aerate the water prior to use."

I hope you are comfortable when I challenge that statement, 'cause I disagree.

Yes, it suctions in air from the top.

However, not all of the water runs out the bottom, yah?
If the water is stale/stagnant going in, what stays in the containers is still stale.

So, I always aerate my water before applying.

    Does it help?
    Seems to.

    Bottom line?
    Aeration does no harm.

Aloha, an' welcome back from bannedville.
    Weeze
