Medical marijuana bill moves forward in state House

A bill that would establish a regulatory system for the medical marijuana business and seek to establish criminal liability protection for patients squeaked out of a House panel late Thursday.

Senate Bill 5073 was passed by 14 to 13 vote in the Ways and Means Committee. It now heads to the Rules panel. If itâ??s approvedthere, it would be considered by the full House chamber. It passed from the Senate on March 2 by a 29 to 20 vote.

The legislation establishes a regulatory system for the medical marijuana business and seeks to establish criminal liability protection for patients, doctors and providers. Washington is one of 15 states where pot use for medical purposes is legal; Voters here overwhelmingly approved an initiative in 1998.

Seattleâ??s mayor, City Councilmembers and City Attorney have lobbied for the measureâ??s passage.
