Get a 5x magnifying glass or one of those pocket microscopes from Radio Shack, and check the trichomes to determine plant maturity.

The buds will go through growth spurts. 55-60 days is likely a baseline for experienced growers with optimal conditions and proper lighting and nutrients. Newbies can expect it to take a tad longer, so be patient..
