God just sent me an e-mail saying he's getting tired of his air space being filled with all these voice talking but saying nothing of value in the long run. He was happy when everything was going through wires, he had peace and quite.....now he's sending a warning.....tone it down or worse is yet to come!!! :lol5:

WASHINGTON (AFP) â?? A geomagnetic space storm sparked by a solar eruption like the one that flared toward Earth Tuesday is bound to strike again and could wreak havoc across the gadget-happy modern world, experts say.

Contemporary society is increasingly vulnerable to space weather because of our dependence on satellite systems for synchronizing computers, airline navigation, telecommunications networks and other electronic devices.

A potent solar storm could disrupt these technologies, scorch satellites, crash stock markets and cause power outages that last weeks or months, experts said Saturday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting.

The situation will only get more dire because the solar cycle is heading into a period of more intense activity in the coming 11 years.

"This is not a matter of if, it is simply a matter of when and how big," said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration administrator Jane Lubchenco.

"The last time we had a maximum in the solar cycle, about 10 years ago, the world was a very different place. Cell phones are now ubiquitous; they were certainly around (before) but we didn't rely on them for so many different things," she said.

"Many things that we take for granted today are so much more prone to the process of space weather than was the case in the last solar maximum."

The experts admitted that currently, little that can be done to predict such a storm, much less shield the world's electrical grid by doing anything other shutting off power to some of the vulnerable areas until the danger passes.

"Please don't panic," said Stephan Lechner, director of the European Commission Joint Research Center, drawing laughter from the scientists and journalists in the audience. "Overreaction will make the situation worse."

The root of the world's vulnerability in the modern age is global positioning systems, or GPS devices, that provide navigational help but also serve as time synchronizers for computer networks and electronic equipment, he said.

"GPS helped and created a new dependency," said Lechner, noting that the technology's influence extends to aerospace and defense, digital broadcast, financial services and government agencies.

In Europe alone, there are 200 separate telecommunication operators, and "nothing is standardized," he said.

"We are far from understanding all the implications here," he said.

World governments are hurrying to work on strategies for cooperation and information sharing ahead of the next anticipated storm, though forecasters admit they are not sure when that may occur.

"Actually we cannot tell if there is going to be a big storm six months from now but we can tell when conditions are ripe for a storm to take place," said the European Space Agency's Juha-Pekka Luntama.

On Tuesday at 0156 GMT, a huge solar eruption, the strongest in about five years, sent a torrent of charged plasma particles hurtling toward the Earth at a speed of 560 miles (900 kilometers) per second.

The force of the Class X flash, the most powerful of all solar events, lit up auroras and disrupted some radio communications, but the effects were largely confined to the northern latitudes.

"Actually it turned out that we were well protected this time. The magnetic fields were aligned parallel so not much happened," said Luntama.

"In another case things might have been different."

Space storms are not new. The first major solar flare was recorded by British astronomer Richard Carrington in 1859.

Other solar geomagnetic storms have been observed in recent decades. One huge solar flare in 1972 cut off long-distance telephone communication in the midwestern state of Illinois, NASA said.

Another similar flare in 1989 "provoked geomagnetic storms that disrupted electric power transmission" and caused blackouts across the Canadian province of Quebec, the US space agency said.

A panel of NASA-assembled scientists issued a report in 2009 that said a powerful solar flare could overwhelm high-voltage transformers with electrical currents and short-circuit energy grids.

Such a catastrophic event could cost the United States alone up to two trillion dollars in repairs in the first year -- and it could take up to 10 years to fully recover, the report said. Gleaned from Rawstory

You can not imagine how happy I am to see this solar activity! Normally we go in an 11 year cycle from peak to peak in sunspot activity and with them, the activation of our ionosphere here on earth. For us Ham Radio operators, this is the thing we wait for... at the peaks of activity it is very easy to communicate... in the valleys it is hard to get a signal to bounce (skip) no matter what we do.
This cycle has been an odd one. Instead of bottoming out around November of 2009 and heading back up into the new cycle, we hit a period called a Mounder Minimum... the second one in all the time we have been counting sunspots since the 1500's! It has been a period of NO solar activity since then... a quiescent sun that has made world wide radio communication nearly impossible.
Up until this week, there has been nothing going on. Today I am hearing signals from all over the globe. This morning I talked to the Ukraine, Japan and the Sudan. It has been too long. Hopefully this new flare has signaled the beginning of a new cycle and we will build to a peak again in the next 5.5 years. That is when it gets crazy in the radio world. I have actually pointed my antenna one direction and then heard my own voice circle the globe 5 times before it faded out. During the peak, you can talk from the Midwest to Europe with a coat hanger as an antenna and 1 Watt of power. I can't wait.
But anyway... that is the truth behind this story. This flare is a good thing. Don't let the press fool you into thinking this is something odd or dangerous. Anything for a story... sometimes these press people really annoy me.

God doesn't have anything to do with this but its certainly going to be an interesting 4 or 5 years. With the solar maximum arriving at the same time the galaxy alignment is happening its going to cause even more gravitational disturbances. If it even comes close to the solar actitvity in 1859 its going to be a wild ride. If its like 1859 we will lose virtually every electronic device on the planet and in space. I would not want to be in the space lab for the next few years.

oh noooo... its all IC's and transistors now. The new rigs are amazing computerized devices that are far and beyond better than the old tube stuff. A lot of that old stuff is still in very good condition and is revered by those who are lucky enough to have them. A good old Collins radio was the standard for a long time that the digital world was not able to compete with... but now, its not even close.

Sometime tomorrow (monday) the x-rays and particles from this solar event will have affected the earths geomagnetic field enough that we will have what is known to us who watch, a major geomagnetic storm. If you have a WWV/WWVH time radio, listen to the report at 18 minutes after the hour. When you hear the A-index (absorption) go up past 7 or 8 we are going to have disruptions in our communications.

With the ionosphere churning trying to dissipate all the added energy, all communications will be reduced to line of sight. Satellite communication having to beam through that disruption will be drastically attenuated by the time the signals get down to us and we will periodically lose the signals from satellites. If you ever wondered why they have like 11 GPS satellites up there, this is one of the reasons. Most of the time you will be able to "see" at least 2 or 3 of them. I would not worry too much about this particular event. It is more X-ray based rather than a proton event which usually are much more disruptive. We know very little about the sun really, but considering that we have only observed this celestial body for a blink of an eye in its lifespan, how could we know much? Many scientists have devoted their lives to this study and at least at this particular time in history we think we understand the 11 year and 27 day cycles of the sun, but its always throwing surprises at us such as the extended minimum on this cycle.

But anyway... this event is nothing. It is a first blast of hopefully a new cycle... we still don't know for sure if the new one has started. If we were ever to have a critical flare that extended out past the first few planets in our system, it would be the end of us... but hey... you would only have 8 minutes to worry about it and then it would be all over. :jointsmile:

Well my pigrem friends aint gunna get into a long speach here on thisin here topic cause no matter what one be sayin another will quickly dispute it or take religous offence to what folk have to say.

I will simply put this out there for the sake of yur youngin ifin yual have some. I live were I live fur a reason I live the way I live for a reason and would it hurt those who are so modernized to be takin some that riches yual be spendin on electronic devices and purchase a few things cheap like this should it be needed

survival kit (cell phome does not count)
Hunting and fishing tools
Personal protection yur prefference
Enough food for each person at 2 meals a day for at least a week.

If yual have family within a weeks walk then talk with them and have a plan in place to meet if there is no means to communicate there wont be. So plan times and places and stick with it.

Now take this equipment and store it in the garage or attick and forget bout it!! Yup forget bout it for now but now yual be havin somethin in place ifin yual need to strick outside yur safty walls cause who realy nows we might have to. Why not just in case dosent hurt and sure aint gointo bust he bank. Plus see how hard it be to risk yur life for these items ifin somethin does happin specialy hard ifin yual got kids in tow just do it for them and wouldnt hurt to read up on some skills be helpin yual out there ifin yual be needin them.

Its all I got to say bout this just be caring for my fellow man and hope nothin happins but ifin it do just hope yual be safe is all.

I think that since this cycle has started so late it is not going to be one of the record setters. The press is simply freaking out because the scientists right now are so excited to see activity finally. I'm not sure that the galaxy aligning is going to affect the sun's output... but we really don't know yet do we? Face it... we are still babies. We think we are so smart... but we have only been playing with electricity for 100 years or so. We still have much to learn.

As far as loosing devices on the planet... this is one of the primary advantages of having an atmosphere. I agree that during a solar peak I wouldn't want to be in skylab, but the sun has been doing this for a long long time. If we couldn't handle it here on earth, we wouldn't be here.
Go to that website I referenced earlier and look at the historical solar flux charts. The peaks in 1779 and 1829 were indeed impressive, but dwarfed by the one we had in 1958. Maybe that explains all those wrinkles you see on old people today? We may never know.

I'm thinkin that you won't need it this time, but I am worried a bit about that meteor that they say is going to come close to us 2 times in the next 40 years or so.... and that second pass sounds like it may be a doozy. The whole scenario sounds like a real negativity scene and I don't like it. It might be a good time to know how to live in a cave before that happens. Who knows? Certainly not us mortals.
