i too was wondering if this could be purchased at a Home Depot or Lowe's. I live in an apartment, and down the line will need to figure this out, so i can add it into my notes.

No, you can't get these at Lowes or Home Depot. Get on Google and do a search for "can carbon filter hydroponic" and I am positive you will be headed in the right direction. I got mine with cash at a hydroponics supply store in the large city near me. You will also need a fan to pull your air through this filter. I spent $130 on a fan, ducting to draw from 2 tents and another $100 on the filter. Hopefully no one told you that growing was a cheap hobby.

Here are the problems with ionizers. They put a negative charge in the air which makes particles of dust, plant smelly things, etc. attract and attach themselves to the walls and such around this generator. Over time, this is going to build up and create a mess that needs to be cleaned up. I would rather have all that mess trapped in a neat filter that I can simply throw away and replace when it has reached its capacity. Also, if you are trying to get air flow into and out of your grow area, you need to scrub this air going out... most ionizers work best in a less breezy environment or a larger room where the particles have time to do that attraction thing before the air is sucked out and replaced by your air flow system. An ionizer is more of a passive system whereas the can filter is an active scrubbing system designed to work with typical air flow. Some will swear by the ionizers and they must work pretty well in some applications or they wouldn't be sold... but my money is on the active carbon filters used in conjunction with our needs to replace the air supply in our grow rooms on a constant basis.

Now if you want to spend a LOT of money, look into the inline ionizers that use very high voltages and are designed to work in an active air duct system. They probably work pretty good, and for the price they charge for them, they damn well better.
