Its amazing how much smell these things put out isn't it? I walked in my house one day and realized that the smell had taken over the entire house. I learned this about the 4th week of vegging with 4 plants. I tried covering it up, but this didn't work. I have heard people talk about using negative ion generators and ozium and cakes or whatever to mask the smell, but what I learned is that you absolutely must scrub the air to get rid of it, you can not mask it totally and if not dealt with, it goes everywhere. This takes a carbon filter and some air flow. The can-filter that I purchased cost me just over $100. It was a very wise investment. Smell is no longer an issue for me here. The filter will last roughly 1 year. When it wears out, I will get another one. Without it, I would never be able to have a visitor in my home, and my secret would definitely get out.

Good luck in solving your problem. I suspect that smell has brought to an end many a clandestine closet grow, long before any other problems crept in.
