MMJ Housing Discrimination
I am posting this thread due to a recent experience I have had here in RI. Although it feels very odd to have a state watchdog endorse, protect and confront the unethical and illegal practice by landlords, owners and realtors against MMJ and cardholders protected by law.
History- I have been searching for a house for rent for my family, not a grow house. I had found a beautiful home and had called the realtor, they had expressed interest in renting to my family. I informed them that I enrolled in RI's MMJ program and wanted to make them aware of it to avoid any problems in the future. I was told at the time that I should present my financial info as well as my medical issues so the home owner may make a decision which I complied to. So after a few days I get this email.....

Hi Tee,
I hope you're doing well. I left you a message yesterday, but wanted to follow-up with an email as well. After careful consideration, the owners of the apartment in Mapleville have decided against renting their apartment to someone with your specific medical treatment. Even after seeking legal advice, they were ready to move forward until they spoke with their other tenant. He has a personal health concern with potentially being exposed. So it is with regard and respect for their current tenant that the owners have reached their decision.
I will keep you in mind if I come across any other 3+ bedroom rental units.
Regards,

As one can imagine I was not happy about the clear violation of my privacy (HIPPA) divulging my medical info to the present tenets. I then contacted the RI Dept of Human Relations which I was very suprised decided to file a complaint against this company. Long story being short, there is help and protection for cardholders and if anyone has run into similiar issues of discrimination please get in touch..OldHead09 Reviewed by OldHead09 on . Yeah... I felt this way too but I do grow medicinal and felt that in the long run it's better to be honest. Actually since then I have found a beautiful home and was honest with homeowners. But one shouldn't have to hide this, either way.

I hear ya. Im just overly paranoid . WHat if your landlord has a son with an oxycontin problem. The parent landlords tell their son at dinner that a MM patient moved into their rental house. Junky son and friends , then go rob your grow.

Then unfortunately that will be the young man who gets shot in the chest for invading my home. As far as human nature and greed, we all have the duty to protect ourselves and one another from that sorts...

Unfortunately there are reprecussions to every action...but I will never gamble with my home in the hands of an intruder. I will take my chances with picking 12, then look at my family and say sorry you were hurt but I didn't wnat to be in trouble...hmmm

I totally understand . Why not have the grow away from the family ? Then there is no issues? Not always possible, just hate to see someone defending there home and family. Then take it in the ass in court !
