i believe that you can start to fert around 30 days or so. if you bought good soil it should have enough nutrients in it to last about that long. after that you need to supplement it with something like miracle grow or some other regular plant food mix. miracle grow works well for me, but there are many many kinds of ferts you could use. about how often to use them, i dont really know for sure, but i use miracle grow on mine 2-3 times a week.
