CAN-FAN IS WORKING TOO GOOD!!
Hi All, MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Well the temp in my tent never gets above 71, tent is downstairs where the temp in the house is lower (about 4-5 degrees) I keep the house at 70 when home and 64 at night and when away, my therms memory shows that the lowest temp so far was 61.4 and the highest temp was 78 (one day when the filter fan didn't kick on) but normally the temp is right around 70 give or take a degree! example right now the temp in the tent is 70.4 and outside the tent it's 65.8! I'm running a 600 watt hps (air cooled) and 1 4' t-5 in each corner of the tent.
Now here's my question, I would like the temp in the tent to run around 73-75 when lights are on, the night time temps aren't a worry. When the filter-fan (filter is inside tent) is not running the temp in the tent goes up dramatically! but then moister in the tent becomes an issue!!
I went to my local supply store and they sold me a "speed controller" which I was told would work but when it's set on the lowest setting it wont kick on when the timer turns on my system! I have to actually turn the knob on the controller to kick the can-fan on? I asked the supply store and was told that it (the controller) has to have a certain amount of amps or something to kick on the can-fan?? and told me not to set it at the low setting but more like half way! but at that setting it doesn't allow enough heat to build up inside the tent! any suggestions? thank you.yetibear Reviewed by yetibear on . Yes, have that problem and just gave up and now run the fan if the lights are on. Your temps are safe no matter what. Frankly Yeti, just let it run, the air exchange is more important than the temp. So long as the roots are above 50 and below 80 the plants should do fine.
I think I was told the fan needed full power to start and then it could be turned down, regardless it would not work if turned down on the speed reduction unit. Happy Ho HO

If you increase the size of the duct it will slow the draw of it down some to about 150 cfm less, without the controller.

This is why most speed controllable motors are DC motors and not AC. AC motors need almost 5 times the current to start (single phase) and are not considered ideal for running at reduced RPMs of rated...that's why they won't start when the speed controller is on less than full speed. You'll need to go to a DC fan motor, and speed controller, to make this kind of set up work....it's not you, it's physics! However, there are/is more than one way to skin a cat...I would try installing dampers in the duct work and letting the fan run full speed, it will be cheaper than going to DC drive. In Home DePot or an A/C supply house can be found what's called a "dampered tab collar"...Instead of reducing the speed of the motor, reduce the airflow by using this and damping it off until you get the tent to run at the temps you desire. They come in various common duct sizes, and are used for just this purpose in branch runs of flex duct in A/C and heating systems....only cost a couple bucks too! You will get the same effect by damping off airflow as you would from reducing fan motor speeds. Hope this helps!

I think what you need is a Temerature control unit. I have one on one of my fans. It will only kick on if the temperature goes over 75F. I don't recall where I bought it, but paid about $70 for it. I also have one on my heating pad for clone propagation. The heating pad stays on and shuts the pad off when it reaches 75F

A damper being used on the exhaust end will cause your fan motor to overheat eventually. It's best to use a damper on a supply. If a fan is rated at 500 cfm, then it should have that running depending on the size and length of duct.

The fan is doing more than removing excess heat. The air exchange is why you need the air. Like having a bunch of people stuffed in a car with the windows rolled up, the air gets stuffy and stagnant, open a window and everyone goes Ahhhh.
You need the air flow period
