    a question about the males

OK, I don't feel like I am too awfully uninformed about the how-to's and the why's of the growing side of this, but I do have a question that I can't seem to find in any of the books, articles, dvds or other information available to the novice grower, so I am just going to throw it out here and see what you all say.

I am growing in a closet. I expect at least 3 of my first 5 plants to be male. Due to the high cost of seeds, I only have 10 to work with and I want to have at least one of my girls go to seed on this first round to provide insurance in case something terrible might happen and I have to start all over.

So, question one... will it work having one pollinated female in the closet during flowering along with the other, or will she rub off on the second female and cause her to also pollinate in some strange shaking off of the pollen sort of way, making it necessary to isolate the pollinated female? I am thinking that I will be OK with this as I have read about being able to pollinate single branches of a female and let the rest of the plant continue sinsemilla production but I wonder if I should isolate her for a while after pollination or spray her off after a period of time to remove excess pollen?

Question 2... I know to remove the males from the closet asap. My plan is to move one to another room, separated by 2 doorways in a small apartment and allow him to bud. When my female is ready, I will bring her to him for their, dare I say, coupling. My worry and what I can not find published is that just having the male budding in the other room is going to be enough to move the pollen into the closet and have him send both my girls into seed production. There is little to no air flow in this apartment, the heat is not forced air and being winter time, the windows are all sealed. Logic tells me that unless I bring the pollen to my isolated girl on my hands or clothing, she will remain safe in the closet.

What do you folks with more experience think of this?

    a question about the males

    1. It's better if the two or more females don't touch each other for a few days. No fans or water spray for 12/24 hours. Take the pollen from the males in another room and paint it on the pistal sites, on the females. I usually just paint the lowest bud sites. (The white hairs will turn brown, soon afterwards) I usually do this just before lights off. I use a pencil brush or you can use a Q-tip. I keep the males in a separate room. I put black plastic garbage bags under the pots and catch the yellow pollen there. Then you can dip the brush in the pollen.

    2. One painted female with only the lowest 1/3 bud sites painted with pollen is capable of making 200+ seeds...

    a question about the males

Exactly what I needed! After reading your link on seed production I see that early on you had the same questions I did. This makes me feel good... at least I am asking the right questions!

    a question about the males

You are asking the right questions and have a fair plan. I have a few suggestions. It is very easy for pollen inside a house to get to another location inside. If exterior venting is present, I suggest the male should be locate near or right at the exhaust vent. Possibly outside on a covered porch and harvest pollen as needed or save in refrigerator in air tight container. Preferably light proof. Light does degrade pollen. Like was stated above, just do a little of the bottom, one branch and mark it (I use a loose zip tie). I pollenate in the 3rd to 4th week of flower.

There are threads about storage of pollen and seeds in the forum, check them out....and yes welcome, we are here to assist those who are willing to learn.

    a question about the males

I like growing ak47 autoflowers,(at the moment anyway) but since they are useless to clone, and I am out of seeds, my next seed purchase is going to be male and female ak47 af seeds. I am going to try my hand at pollinating and producing seeds. Especially after seeing this post this am! Very interesting!
Thanks DP & WW. I hadn't even realized that you can pollinate just part of a plant!
Being that auto's are so small, and seeds ain't cheap, This is great news to me.
