    how important is ventilation?

can it mean the difference between a healthy plant, and a dead plant? I know that people generally want to supply their plant with fresh air, but I would like to hear from someone with some real experience with that. Would a plant die if you kept it in a closed grow-closet, and only opened it every day or two?

It's just that my intuition goes against the notion that plants can consume that much air. My intuition wants me to believe they consume miniscule amounts of air.

    It's pretty important KIM,

Plants during lights on take in co2 from the air and give off oxygen.
Ambient levels of co2 in the air is only about 300-350 PPM (parts per million) they can use that amount up rather quickly.
During lights out the plant takes in oxygen and gives off co2 plus moisture, it can raise the humidity a lot.

The easy way to deal with these issues is provide some ventilation.

Time to read up on plant's needs and don't go by your intuition.

oldmac your spot on with those instructions!

I've noticed my humidity has been way high for a few days. It's been chilly and warm... I've kept it at a level I'm happy with by adding a small fan. Just to stir the air up even if the lights are off. Low temps. were 68 lights-out. That'll change when we ever get winter??:stoned:

    how important is ventilation?

I did once, in a small closet cabinet like 40x40x100cm. But opened several times in a day. There was only air coming from backside from a little hole where the cable for bulbs coming in. Say 5 cm. max. And the bulbs were 1x100watt 2x 40 watt incandescent spots 24h on. Bagseed. 20 liter pot. 1:1 peat : perlit. No nutes. She grew out of the cabinet then i put her at the corner of the room, only top were open, still no vents. I showed sunlight time to time (almost everyday min. 2-3 hours sunlight and fresh air). After i sexed her light fixture fell on her and broke her from half. That was the end of adventure. All this happened in a month or 1,5. She was like 1 meter long, she was ok.

I don't recommend this to anybody! Conditions can be different in many ways.

    how important is ventilation?

I agree with the other posts.

Im very new to this growing but from the time ive spent looking at various posts and websites i would say air flow is VERY important.

I have invested two 5" fans pumping/ducting in fresh outside air into my grow and i also have one 16" fan inside moving the air around too.

I dont think you can ever have to much smoke eeeerrrrr i mean air :rastasmoke:

I agree with most of the other posters, but look at it this way ...

If it was growing in its natural environment how much air flow would it have? Basically unlimited. Give it air flow and when you harvest you will be a very happy camper!

Ventilation also helps to keep the temps down while running a lot of lights.
I use a fan to circulate the air, but I also have an adjustable ventilation to control the temps and humidity.

Lynhal your absolutly right. Many times I fall back on the natural environment of plants to make decisions, or help solve a problem.

    how important is ventilation?

im currently runnin a setup that will help you right here i think.

you can check out my log but this is my 2nd closet grow. led's and t5's i have 0 fresh air in there right now but as you can see there is still nice growth.

I put a ExHale CO2 Bags co2 bag from my hydro store in there as a subsitute so the plants can absorb some kind of air.

have a fan just to give airflow around the top of the cannopy.

i wish i had fresh air inside. it is key and will keep the plants happier. your plants will still grow with out it and you can make it happen.

i have my room completely sealed with a 4" comp fan just pulling air out. doesnt do much but my room stays a constant 80f.
    hope this helps.

like everyone else says tho. it is key and will make for a happier plant but that doesnt meean they wont grow with out it.
