Christie announces deal on medical marijuana laws
(12/03/10) TRENTON - Gov. Chris Christie has announced a deal over medical marijuana in New Jersey. It would allow more places to grow and offer pot to patients, but would continue to limit the potency of the drug.
The deal would allow six alternative treatment centers to both grow and distribute medical marijuana. Christie had wanted only two growers and four distribution centers.
Lawmakers voted nearly a year ago to allow medicinal cannabis. But some lawmakers said the rules proposed by the administration undermined the intent of the law.
Christie worked out the compromise with supporters of the law, including Democratic Assemblyman Reed Gusciora.
The state Health and Senior Services commissioner said that the timetable hasn't changed, and medical marijuana should be available this summer.
