Yes, red and far red have an effect on the plant. With the correct ratios you can hold down height and get tighter node spacing.
A great source for far red are incandescent halogen bulbs, such as GE Reveals. They are also pretty cheap, 100 watt bulb is like $5.00.
I use them as "trigger" lights in my personal grow, they come on 1/2hr before my regular lights start the photoperiod and stay on abt 1/2hr from then. Then they come on again abt 1/2hr before lights out, and stay on 1/2 hr after that. I started doing this abt 4 years ago based on some info I got from a commercial greenhouse operator near me. I didn't understand it then and just barely understand it now.
