If a seed opens up, is it a given that it will sprout?

Noob here. I tried germinating a pair of seeds and threw them away after about 5 days thinking they were no good. I read up a little on here and i'm trying again with an individual seed from the same batch. I have it in a tupperware with damp paper towels and a thermometer that indicates a range of 74 - 81 fahrenheit.

I could see the whitish root after the seed broke open after 2 - 3 days and has sort of stayed the same the following 3 days.

So, after 6 days of germinating, my question is: if the seed has opened, is it a fact that it will eventually sprout? Or could it have gone bad somehow?

Sometime they wont make it but for the most part they will.

That being said, you have to consider the soil/substrate you put it in and what you water it with.

If you stick a germed seed in "hot" soil and water with "hot" nutes it'll never grow enough to break the surface.

If you read till your eyes bleed and stick it in good recommended soil and water it correctly it's chance of breaking the surface and growing should be pretty darn close to 100%.

Since you're a self proclaimed noob I suggest clicking the Books link in my sig and doing a lot of reading. Spend several days/weeks reading and thinking about the growing conditions you would like to provide and plan it well in the beginning. Haste makes waste and without proper knowledge before hand your most likely gonna run into a lot of issues later. Being prepared now will help you handle situations better in the future.

Once you see the root you are supposed to put it in your medium, not keep it in the paper towels and watch the root grow. Once in the soil the seedling will break soil in 2-4 days usually, keep the area of soil where you planted the seed moist until the seedling emerges.

nice diagrams, it really is a gateway crop, never grew anything until I discovered cannabis, now I grow any seeds I can get my hands on from watermelons to sunflowers.

I'll third that

I was raised growing veggies and eventually got away from it for some unknown reason.

Now there's 40 germed seeds from bout 8 diff things in peatpods getting ready to sprout.

But aren't I supposed to wait until the root is out of its shell by 1/4 of an inch? I wouldn't want to wait around 2 weeks with the seed in the medium. I think I'd get more impatient if I didn't see it surface. That's why I'm waiting it out where I can see it.

So, I don't know... :wtf: Should I wait another week?

If the beans have popped and the root is poking out it's best to put them into something soon. I wont recommend waiting much longer.

This thread made me think about some issues I have had with cracking the beans and getting them into soil. I would like to see at least 1/4-1/2 inch out, but the last bean I popped had barely cracked the shell when I dropped it in. Doing fine.

But to my point. There have been times when the bean wouldn't pop open....it swelled, but no white root. So I have taken forceps and very carefully put force on the seam until it cracked. Next day I had a 3/4 inch root. Don't give up on seeds that don't crack is my whole point....took me long enough didn't it.

I have had this happen to me a few times too, I came to my own conclusion that I had kept the seed too warm. as long as you see a tail like root coming out it is time to put it in. waiting for the root to grow to 1/4 inch barely makes a difference in sprout time and increases the chance of damaging the root. Just put it in right when you see the root.

Just be patient, I know how you feel, when i first started I impatiently poked around in the soil looking to see how my seed was doing only to end up killing it.
