All gas discharge lamps require a ballast, from HID to fluorescent. Who told you CFLs don't require a ballast?
I think he means that they don't have an external ballast. You are right of course ,The ballst on the CFL's he is talking about (E40 fitting that I use) have the ballast built into them.
Ask as many questions as you want irishbud we are all here to learn and fine tune our growing im not saying i know it all because believe me im only learning myself so all the info that every one is given im taken in just like you.
But any way them 125 to 250 cfl,s are all self ballast but if your on about the fitting that the cfl screw,s in to the man in the grow shop should have them for sale. As i said blue for veg red for flowering but there is purple cfl,s that are for veg and flowering. If you want when my lights are off over my plants been in flowering i will take my the lights and stuff apart and post a few pic,s for you bro if that help,s:hippy:
Bro thats one thing i havent got a clue about is grow lights how they work and ect. Just starting to find out how to use them never mind what make,s om work ha. But id say if there was a way to get that high intensity discharge from a low watt bulb in a cfl form that would be cool. Going to check out your log,s bro it looks your doing great with your leds.:hippy:
Run that 125w CFL vertical with a few smaller plants surrounding it and I think you'd see your yields improve dramatically.
Yeah, I am still tweaking my setup and have already experimented with smaller plants. I have a friend who was getting 4oz a plant with CFL's. My current aim is 1g per watt of light and in the future going down the led route.

I wouldn't necessarily say low wattage for a high intensity discharge, although that could be possible as well. I would think it possible to make a high pressure high-discharge low-wattage fluorescent lamp given a proper bulb material construction, since the majority of the output comes from the mercury and then high amounts of excitable gas in the tube, which requires high pressures and thus a strong tube to contain (typically some sort of fused silica or quartz or alumiglass.) The more gas that hits the excitation state (within a proper ratio, there's always the law of diminishing returns, which you can see in 600w HPS vs 1000w HPS in the lumens output) the more light possible to be output.
However, how much heat that could generate remains to be seen, as well as the efficiency overall, not just the lamp itself, but ballast and thermal dissipation and output as well.
Phatjay, I would suggest you go a little more scientific and try to hit one gram per kilowatt-hour of power used. That might take a bit more math, but I think you'll find it something more impressive once you do the comparison math.

guys, i only havs 2 grows under my small belt haha but i done them the same. i grew in soil and used 4 cool white tubes the 2 foot ones i think they are to veg, i let them veg for at least 8 weeks before changing to hps to flower. are there new types of fluorescent lights out now? i seen some guy on youtube and he was using 1 4 foot tube to veg at least 10 plants and they were pritty big. can anyone bring me up to date on what iv missed over the past 4 years.
