Temp change from lights?
I will be running 4-1000w hps/mh lamps and want to know if there is a formula to determine how much radiant heating they would provide for 260sq/ft. with 8th ceilings. I am considering running a sealed room with an automatic climate controller. That way I can supplement the atmosphere with a co2 generator. My grow room is about 65 degrees. I'm thinking that I could use vent fans connected to the temp. function on my controller to cool the lights/room when it gets too warm. Venting would pull air from the outside through the ducting and straight out. Would this approach work? This will be my first grow however I am confident with my experience growing other "things" along with my chemistry degree that I will achieve some degree of success. I will be using an ebb&flow bucket type system starting with 36 plants and eventually expanding to 60. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My other concern is that the exterior air in the dead of winter might damage the bulbs, can this pose a problem? Thanks!

Temp change from lights?
Hello kzoorugger and welcome to the boards.
The easiest method of calulating heat from your lights is to treat them like electric heaters. 1000 watts equals 3,413 BTUs, so 4 of those suckers will add 13,652 BTUs of heat.
I'm assuming you are talking about using sealed glass reflectors, with outside air passing thru them, and then out. Good way to knock down some of the heat. But keep in mind with a sealed room you will have heat gain from the lights anyway from that radiant output, so be prepared for some form of additional cooling. BTW you will probably need to run that light cooling whenever the lights are on.
Don't worry about hurting the lights with cold air. The only thing that might happen is condensation forming on the outside of your reflectors or ducting if it is not insulated.
Very ambitious starting with this size grow but if you have experience growing other things, well you might pull it off.
Good luck

Temp change from lights?
Thanks for the reply. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions for the community down the road. I've been doing plenty of reading. In the past I've been a member of other bbs and always hated all of the repeat questions. So I definitely try to do as much research as possible before I ask questions. Hopefully down the road I can post a grow log or at least some of my experience. Once again thank you.
