    Advice?

Well... This school year is almost over (I am a junior) and I am doing horribly. I think that I am failing like 3 or 4 classes- Im not dumb or anything, I just have a very hard time paying attention and my mind just wanders (even when I go to class with the mind-set that I am going to focus and do my work). I do wonderfully on tests but I just dont do classwork or homework. I recently was put on an attendance contract since I skipped like 32 days, which means I have to go the rest of the year. I am pretty sure I will not have enough credits to graduate sooo- What do you guys think about getting a GED? My plans after high school are to go to culinary school and become a chef. With a GED I can still go to Culinary school and community colleges. What do you think?

i know a few people with GED's ,so long as it fits your future ,they work.
if you can pass the test your educated like any other with 12 yrs at a desk.
dont let nobody tell ya any different ,a GED will open same doors as a diploma ,in fact it is one,it says you have your basic skills.

I would do it since i did do it...if u think its the right thing do it...i was given the chance to goto an alternative school but i said no and got my GED. Also i already was planning on going to community college as soon as i graduate so highschool didnt matter and now i can transfer to most colleges since im passing wit good grades. Just remember this highschool is not for everyone

If your only a Junior, can't you make it up in the next few years? If not a GED will work for you by the sounds. Just get your act together and maybe smoke less bud if that's what's fucking with you. You could always turn to behavioral problem drugs like Ritalin, Adderal or Dexedrine; however I recommend staying away of Dexedrine, or any of those for that matter but they may possibly help you. I don't really know what to tell you as I'm not even in High School yet so I don't really grasp the concept of your situation, in any case: good luck dude!

government run teaching facilities treat you as if you had a barcode across your ass. Your scanned, evaluated on the same scale as everyone else, and your set on a shelf with everyone else. Your creativity, individuality, and learning style don't really make a fuck to them as long as you do exactly as they say stand in line nicely and don't put gum under the seats. Not everyone learns the same and ADD didn't even exist until 40 years ago. Your mind isn't there with the boring old person in boring old clothes reading her government approved script she has memorized and is force feeding down your throat in the dryest, most unimaginative way with a droning monotone voice....yes obviously your the problem. lol
fuck em, drop out, get your ged and find somewhere you are not treated like a dolt.
I have my ged, I went to community and state college, I make 200$ an hour now. You can be a success if you want to be and it sounds like you know where your at. Just don't lose your focus once you drop out and get your Good Enough Diploma. ;-)

I am a lurker here, but I have to say: Stay in school! You will NEVER get a good job with a GED.

You have have ADD or some other problem. This evidently means something to you, so if you feel you can't go to your parents then go talk to a school conselor. They can get you help, both with your attention problems and with your studying.

Of course, you could always listen to some peoples advice and go work at McDonalds. Or become a SEX worker. Then you, too, can make $200 an hour.

    Advice?

    fidethefire:

What, are you HIGH? (Oooops, forgot the context ). Here are my thoughts:

School is your job at this stage in your life, and it is one of the BEST jobs anyone can have. I have a great job and I still wish I could afford to be a professional student.
We are lucky in this country. There are many places the in the rest of the world whre you would not be given the opportunity to drop out, they would have KICKED you out a long time ago without an opportunity to go to community college later. Don't waste your opportunity.
People -usually people without education- will try to present all kinds of ancedotal evidence to support a bogus claim that education has nothing to do with income or quality of life. BULLSHIT! Sure there a are some people without an education who have good jobs, but they are the EXCEPTION, not the rule. And nearly all the time, their job - usually entrepreneurial business owners- has absolutely NOTHING to do with their level of education.
I have been on both sides: without education in low paying jobs where I used my body (restauraunt worker, lower enlisted in the Army, a landscaper in Texas in the summer, a window washer); with education in high paying, jobs where I used my MIND (a business manager and a software developer). The latter is WAY better, believe me.
I dropped out, joined the army, got a little older and decided I wanted a piece of the pie. I didn't want some moron with a degree telling me what to do. I wanted a decent house. But without a degree it didn't matter one bit. The people with more education were calling the shots. Make now mistake aobout it, the people with the degrees call the shots. Until I got my degree I could not get any traction. As soon as I got my degree everything changed. I did it the hard way. Believe me, it is MUCH, MUCH harder to go back and fix things than it is to just do it right the first time.

I could go on for pages about how I have seen where education DOES make a difference. I have worked and do work with well educated people (most from outside the U.S., by the way) and it DOES make a difference. They not only know more because of what they have learned, they are able to learn new things much quicker, they are more productive, they are better able to communicate their ideas, on and on and on.

But I don't think any of this matters to you. I don't think your issue has anythging to do with education, I think it has to do with motivation. If you are not motivated to do one of the easiest, most rewarding things now, I doubt you will be motivated to do much else later. Maybe Kyle is right, smoke less bud!

    Good luck!
