Dispelling the Myth that the DOH wants to keep prices high.
There seems to be some misinformation floating around about the DOH. Im not sure who perpetuated this myth, got a couple guesses though.
I have heard it from several patients on these boards, and a couple producers as well. That the DOH wanted to keep the prices high to avoid patients from reselling their meds to either other patients or on the black market at a profit.
Contacted Dominick V. Zurlo for clarification, here is what he said.
""Dear Sir,
The NMDOH does not and has never set the prices for medical cannabis. Each non-profit producer sets their own prices. The NMDOH continues to review and license producer applications in part to increase the supply of medical cannabis to meet patient needs. This process does take time, and ensuring the safety of medication for patients is one of the paramount tasks of the program.
You are correct in that if the NMDOH wanted to keep prices high, it would not issue PPL's, and so the comments from other organizations you have heard do not make any sense with regard to this. At this time, over 1/3 of all patients have PPL's. Also, just as a reminder, at this time, any excess must be turned over to law enforcement for destruction. Giving or selling excess medical cannabis produced by a patient to anyone else is expressly prohibited and illegal.
Thank you,
Dominick V. Zurlo,
