While Otis recorded and released a different version in 1965, here in this TV performance, Otis and the Bar-Kays paid homage to Aretha Franklin with this version of Respect. Sadly, this would turn out to be Otis' final TV appearance. The day after this TV taping, Otis' plane had crashed into the icy waters of Lake Monona near Madison, Wisconsin. Otis, his valet, the pilot, and four members of the Bar-Kays died at the bottom of that frozen lake.

In January 1968, one month after Otis' death, Stax/Volt Records released (Sittin On) The Dock Of The Bay, in which Otis had recorded nearly a week before the crash and had considered it to be an unfinished recording. Within weeks, the record shot to #1, making it the first posthumous number-1 record in rock history..
