DIY Lighting
I take no credit for this guide, I actually found it while I was searching for pumpkin stencils online. You can see the original here.
I am no electrician, but I think I could handle a small project like this. I have thought about doing this to make my own fixtures that can support high wattage CFL lights, right now I'm stuck with those dinky cheap 'clamp lamps' from Wall-Mart®.

Let's get to it:
(Since IMG code is turned off, just click the links to see the pictures.)
This is an inexpensive Portable Light to make:
DO NOT PLUG IN UNTIL 100% COMPLETED !
Tools and Parts:
1. Extension cord (8 to 15 foot)
2. Octagon Electrical Box w/ 1/2 inch knockouts
3. 1/2 inch cable fitting
4. Porcelain Ceiling Lampholder
5. Electrical Tape
6. Light Bulb
1. Screwdriver
2. Wire Strippers
3. Pair of Pliers
You can find these supplies at stores like Home Depot®, Lowes®, Menards®, your local mom and pop hardware store, etc.. They should be relatively inexpensive, $1-$6 USD depending on brand, etc.
Step One:
Cut off the receptacle End of the Extension cord; strip the ends off the wire using your wire strippers, and twist each wire
Step Two:
Push in (by tapping hard) one of side knockouts with a screwdriver.
Twist the metal from the inside with a pair of pliers to remove it.
NOTE: The two screws shown on the top of the box are included with the Lamp holder.
Step Three:
Place your cable fitting in the hole; make sure the nut is tight inside the electrical box.
