Relatively new to rolling my own joints
Yeah I like to break up the weed manually when I'm rolling a joint.
I find that the stickiness left on my fingertips helps to grip the paper better!
Also when you break up by hand you can pick out the little sharp tips of stems that can puncture through the paper. That is a pet peeve of mine.

Very nice description emilya. I've never tried that method, so I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. I'm a dedicated bowl smoker, but on occasion I roll what can only be called functional joints. Next time I will try your method. [attachment=o261108]

Relatively new to rolling my own joints
I've now been smoking for almost 21 years now. I have always been able to roll a smokable joint, but talk about a guppy or sometimes what amounts to a windsock, after a couple of papers. One of my problems is lack of dexterity with my short, fat fingers. I always ended up either tearing it or losing my herb running out the ends. SOoooo, I have used a Tops roller for years. There are a couple tricks to it, but the end product is sweet! I can roll a J with enough herb to get medicated 3 times! BUT, you risk overpacking. A large straightend paperclip run through the middle and it hits like a champ. I've always found that if I pull off the main stem of a bud, from bottom to top you can avoid the main stem and a grinder will take care of the smaller stuff.
That being said, I found a video tutorial by(didn't even know who he was before this) Wiz Khalifa on youtube and have been rolling decent J's since. The trick for me is twisting that one end. He's a cocky little guy, but his method has worked well for me.

I still prefer the grinder, but when not available either a shotglass and a pair of scissors, or by hand. Here's what I roll by hand after watching the tutorial. Not perfect, but pretty in it's own way.
I hope you can see what I was talking about by looking at this half used nug of WhiteWidow.

Then you just roll it up, light it up, smoke it down!
Oh, and always put a filter in. Tearing off a little piece of paper gum packaging is even enough. Then you can smoke it down to the last sweet hit!
