just starting to bud / plant problem!!

havent posted in a while...heres a few pics of what goin on my plants are about 2 months old

the bad plant: stem was funny looking at the bottom, but stiff...then on an abnormally humid day about a week ago the plant just toppled over

im guessing the majority of the problem is attributed to me neglecting to trim the plant and it was too top heavy

1) why is the stem like that? my ph is at 5.9 - 6.1
2) is trimming a good idea? and where the eff do i trim!?

i cut the stem right after the "rot" and where it bent
