    generally speaking, it should be done without negative effects on the plant. So basically it means when your plant is big enough not to be affected by cutting some branches. A plant is ready for cutting clones when you can take about a quarter or a third of the leaves/branches off without affecting the plant. The roots have to be well established. You didn't mention how big your plant was....
