If you sucessfully extract the DXM using ammonia, ligrion , and citric acid the Guaifenesin will recrystallize out with the DXM when you add the ammonia. so if you follow the liquid-liquid extraction proceedure you will still get Guaifenesin in your product. Liquid-liquid extraction is simple in theory but it is difficult to actually do successfully, especially without a glass separatory funnel. I have found that doing extractions without a funnel is easiest to do in very small amounts at a time, by shaking the freebase with the petr. ether and then pouring it into a short glass and using a medicine dropper to suck off the top organic layer. It is tedious and time consuming but I have been able successfully extracted fatty acids, oils, and terpenes with medicine droppers. In organic chem lab when we worked on microscale we used droppers to extract out of vials rather than using funnels. Separating Guaifenesin from DXM would not work by freebasing and would require another method.

It might be a good Idea to 'wash' (i.e. do extractions with your solutions and solvents to help clean them to make them purer) your petr. ether with sodium chloride solution, baking soda solution and then a few times with water to try to help get some of the impuriteis. You will then want to drain out as much of the water as you can throw away and then add some salt to the washed ether to dry the remaining water from the solvent. Then you can decant the washed and dried solvent into a storage container. You would want to do allot for a stock solution of the ligroin.

Then take some of the stock petr. ether and wash your ammonia with it to make a ammonia stock solution. Pour petr. ether waste from ammonia washing into marked waste bottle and store. so then you will have the remaining washed petr. ether that you did not use to prepare your ammonia and your washed ammonia stock to use for the extraction.

You also want to kepp all your wast chemicals in separate containers so you don't mix somthing like ammonia and bleach on accident. You also want to keep ethyl ether away from bleach, oxidzing agents, and air to help prevent explosion. Remember you don't want a fire!
