FRESNO, Calif. -- Fresno County lawmakers have passed an emergency ban on outdoor marijuana gardens that they say applies to residents with doctors' recommendations to grow and use pot.

The county Board of Supervisors said it approved the 45-day ban on outdoor cultivation Tuesday in response to a series of violent confrontations between homeowners with backyard pot plots and marijuana thieves.

A Fresno man was shot and killed last week by a medical marijuana patient who suspected that thieves were raiding his crop. Police Chief Jerry Dyer says shots were fired during two other similar incidents this month.

County Counsel Kevin Briggs says everyone growing marijuana in unincorporated parts of the county will have to relocate their plants while officials draft a permanent ban. He told the Fresno Bee that medical marijuana patients can grow their plants indoors
