HELP ME WIRE THIS TIMMER PLEASE!!
I cobbed this from another post. I do not own a timer nor am I an electrician. This is for information only and I willl assume NO responsibility.
A little more info about your particular timer would be helpful.
Good luck!
The timers black (hot) goes to the phase (hot) of the mains.
The timers red (load) goes to the black (hot) of the switch/fan (as that is the load).
The white is connected to the other white plus to the white from the mains.
The green is connected to the other green plus to the green from the mains.
The timer need to be connected to hot and neutral (what you call common) to work and to ground to be "safe".
To supply the fan, it further needs an output, which is hot when the timer is supposed to drive the load connected to it and hence the four wires.

Likely you could find the timers' directions on the company website. Google "brand - model - installation instructions" and see what pops-up.

The photos arent good enough nor have you provide a model number for the timer, both needed to give better advice for actual wiring advice. Past that I will offer a suggestion as to why the breaker is blowing. Is it possible you have a 10 or 15 amp breaker and it is to that you are connecting the timer, lights and possibly other loads as well? I dont know for certain which light you have, but it's possible that light and or whatever else it is your connecting, might be drawing more then the 15 amp breaker can handle. Not uncommon at all to need to connect this kind of equipment to a 20amp line.
Was the timer not wired when it arrived? If you plug just the timer into the wall does it throw the breaker? If so, then the amp overload theory is out since you weren't drawing a load. Next step: without the timer can you plug the lights into the wall and do they come on or does fuse blow? If so then the amp theory is no longer a theory. Finally, do you have a multimeter that could aid you? It might do nothing more then help you discover which wire goes with which prong on the socket and that might help you to wire it correctly. Look for the infinity sign on the meter, that's a continuity checker and it will tell you which end of one wire is the end of another. As best as possible you should attempt to match color for color but I assume your at least that smart already and at least one side does not match up with the other, but there it is in case that hadn't occurred to you yet.

alright: clearly the front side screws are for you to connect a lose wire up through that hole and attach the wires to the screw posts. That is for the light fixture side of the timer. I cant make out very well the back side though. Are those free dangling wires or is there a socket where this plugs into the wall? The back side of the device is what we need to sort out and figure out how to get it power. Unless those screw posts are marked a multimeter would be very useful in making sure you aren't crossing the lines. I suspect that might be what your doing now. Those front three posts need to match up with the back side so that you aren't trying to cross ground lines or the hot side. Make sense? You may have it wired up correctly in the back but if you cross the wires up front, then you have a short. The same holds true for the back side, which is why the meter might come in handy. Make sure the timer is set to on though or is somehow tripped to allow the circuit to be made. If the timer is off then a meter will never show continuity even if you have it wired correctly. Again, make sense?
