Santa Barbara Sheriff's Narcotics detectives have discovered an elaborate marijuana growing facility in Dos Pueblos area that may be the largest illicit indoor/greenhouse grows in Santa Barbara County history.

Working on a tip, Sheriff's Narcotic detectives identified the operation on a 50-acre private parcel that was once part of the larger Dos Pueblos Ranch property. Most of the illegal plants are growing in nine large greenhouses that were once part of the Dos Pueblos Orchid Company that sits between Highway 101 and the Pacific Ocean. The facility also included an indoor grow site outfitted with lights, fans, heaters, a drying room and a large area for processing and packaging the marijuana. The indoor grow also featured a sophisticated heat and ventilation control system that allowed the growers to harvest year round.

More than two dozen Sheriff's personnel served a search warrant as they descended on the property before 8:00am on Thursday, August 12, 2010. "This is by far the most elaborate indoor and greenhouse marijuana operation I've ever seen, and I've been on more eradications than I can count," said Lt. Sonny LeGault of the Sheriff's Narcotics Unit.

Narcotics detectives estimate the number of marijuana plants to be between ten and twenty thousand with a street value between $40-80 million. Narcotics detectives also seized several hundred pounds of processed marijuana with a street value up to $1million. However, a final count will not be available until Sheriff's personnel complete eradicating all the plants which is expected to take most of the day.

Sheriff's personnel arrested two men who attempted to flee during the search warrant. Kelvin Kent Kelley (DOB 12/26/48) and John Freeman Dodson (DOB 6/18/53) were booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for felony Possession of Marijuana for Sale (11359 HS) and felony Cultivation of Marijuana (11358 HS). Kelley was also booked for Resisting/Evading Arrest (148(A)(1) PC). Both men are being held on $30,000 bail.

Narcotics detectives believe the property was leased and the owner was not aware of the illegal operation. The investigation will continue and more arrests may be pending. Booking photos are not currently available.

I guess some corporate types must be involved because of the money it takes to run an operation of that size. Too bad, they jumped the gun and won't ever benefit from cannabis. someone is going away for a long, long time. :stoned:
