I've never used a sponge but I know if you take an empty roll of paper towls and put dryer sheets inside of it then blow any smoke through it there will be no smell of MJ at all... just to smell of the sheets! I'm sorry I cannot answer your question better.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that doesnt happen, its masks it temporarily and then finally when the scent bonds to something else in the air, or when it touches something, you then get the MJ smell.
