    My First Grow: NEED HELP!!!!

    After getting my California MMR (Medical Marijuana Recommendation) this past month, I have finally gotten around to building myself a grow closet in my home. Now that I have all the equipment set up properly, I am ready to start my grow. However, one issue has held me up from introducing 10-12 clones into my new grow closet, Tempature. My grow closet seems to peak at about 86 Degrees with the light on, give or take a few degrees depending on the daily weather. Is this suitable for a growing enviornment? A full list of equipment and specs is available below this post.

    Equipment:

    * 1,000 Watt HPS Sun System, by: Sunlight Supply, Inc.
    * 1,000 Watt Interchangeable Ballast, by: Lumitek. (1,000w/750w/600w) -Running at 600 Watts-
    * 6? inch Centrifugal Fan, by: ValuLine (X2) Cold Air in / Hot Air Out
    * 6? inch x 24? inch Carbon Filter by: Phresh Filters
    * 25ft of 6?? inch Ducting
    * 3 Gallon Pots (10-12) W/ Catch Plates
    * Soil
    * Nutrients
    * 10-12 Clones from Cannabis Club.

    Closet Space: 3ft x 3 1/2ft with about 3ft of vertical grow room. Both cool air intake and hot air exhaust are fed down through the hatch underneath the house where they are sent in different directions.

    I pay up to 15 dollars a piece for each clone. I need to make sure there are no mistakes that will cause them to fail. Will 10-12 Sativa clones be ok in an 86 degree tempature with a humidity level around 38-40&?

    Thanks in advance.

    I've been running tests all day with my closet. It gets as high as 88, but stays around 86. I think it is safe to say that 86 is the consistent tempature. Any cooling tips other than buying a small AC Unit which I have absolutley no room for, or should I just give it a try at 86?

    i think your problem is that you have way to big of a light for a 3 foot closet.

    I keep my 1000 watt 2-3 feet away from the plants. Any closer than that and i get light bleaching.

    a 250 watt, or even a 400 watt light would be better for that kind of space.

    also....make sure that the ballast is out of the grow area. That creates ton of heat by itself.

    You can also get a air cooled hood to cool your bulb.

    just throwing out some idea's here

    I am aware that my equipment is overkill for my little 3ft x 3 1/2 ft closet, LOL. :thumbsup: That is the primary issue I am having. However... This is the equipment I have and I just cant go out and buy other things when I spent 1,000 bucks on the set up I have now. There is no turning back at this point. My only other option would be to build a grow box out of wood in my garage.

    Thanks for the tips. I will look into removing the ballast from the closet and an air cooled hood to see if that will help. Or I might just cave in and buy a mini AC that I could somehow squeeze in there.

    the AC might not be needed. Taking the Ballast out should lower the temp at least a few degress. Those fuckers get really hot sometimes. that alone could be enough to solve your problems.

    Also if you have a good fan already just get a hood, or a cool tube. That WILL lower temps also.

    If you do both of those things i have a feeling your going to be good to grow:thumbsup:

    hello - new to the forum myself...

    Just read through this and I have to say that if you have the option, building a grow box/cabinet in a garage is very, very simple and ultra effective because it allows you to have the height or ceiling to veg a little longer and grow taller/bigger plants that will yield you nicely.......

    If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to contribute....

    My first grow was done inside of a wood grow box that I built inside of my garage

    Yielded 7.5 ounces or 212 grams from 2 short plants.............

    Again, I Highly recommend you go the garage grow box route....That 1000 watt light with only 3 feet of ceiling is going to be a problem i predict and is also going to minimize your yield potential in a massive way....

    Just trying to help,

    peace

    Thank you very much for your input. Idealy, a garage grow box is exactly what I want and plan on doing. I want to get the full usage out of the 1000w light and Ballast combo I have. I already started my closet grow, so I have to finish out this first grow. After that, I will be building a garage grow box for some mother plants. I will then turn my little grow closet into a vegging room for clones with a much toned down light. It is all coming together now.... thanks to everyone's help on the boards. :thumbsup:

    sounds like it's all coming together for you there

    i wanted to add, that if you plan your grow accordingly, you may be able to heat your garage with the heat that comes from your 1000 watt light.

    nice if you live in a colder area of the globe

    good luck

    Yes, your light is too big for the area, and it will be almost impossible to CONTROL the environment in your area. 86F is high, and its at the VERY high point. You can control the temps a bit by as already mentioned, removing the ballast out of your space. Another thing you might consider is the 25ft of ducting. I would imagine it is the flexible stuff. If you can reduce the length to half or less than that, I think you would gain extra horsepower out of your fan(s) resulting in some lower temps. If you can replace the flexible to whats called 'warm air pipe', using as little bends as possible ....that would be much better. The best you will be able to do is about 10F above the ambient temperatures being pulled in. That means if you're pulling in fresh air at 75F, then you should expect about 85F in your grow space.
